Beneteau Oceanis 411 Clipper Qld
Hello everyone.

I have an Oceanis 411 Clipper. Originally I believe the engine was a Volvo Penta, but has been changed at some point to a Nanni, which caught fire and burned. There is a possibility to rebuild the current engine (Not assured until removed and sent off), or put in a new engine. Sorry for the sketchy details, as I’ve been unable to exactly identify the current engine but I believe at best guess it is Nanni 4 cyl 30-40hp Kubota base.
Any advice for the most cost effective solution? It would be great to use the current gearbox and I’m wondering if I could fit a smaller Nanni, say 20hp without compromising safety. I’m not concerned with having a faster boat under motor.

many thanks for any help or ideas

The 411 listings I find generally have engines of at least 44 HP. Most are 55 or even 60. 20 HP for a 17,000 boat would be pretty anemic. If you’re just looking for something to get in an out of harbors in calm conditions it could be ok, but I doubt you’d be able to motor anywhere near hull speed, and you’d have a hard time in any kind of unfavorable sea state. Depending on your battery bank and alternator just charging the batteries could be a relatively large percentage of the 20hp. Also figure that when you go to sell the boat you’re going to need to price it assuming a buyer will need to do another repower.

If the existing engine is built on a Kubota block you could look at Beta engines. They use Kubota blocks and have lots of different HP options. They could probably talk to you and figure out whether any of their options could fit your existing gearbox.

Welcome to you. Glad you joined the SBO forum.

Repowering a boat is a major decision. An engine that caught fire may have damaged more than just the engine. Sounds like it is off the boat.

I am in the middle of an engine/transmission rebuild. Choosing that path was a complex process for me. My boat is 49 years old. It‘s value without an engine is negligible. With an engine it has a value maybe 2 times the rebuild estimate. A brand new engine would additionally require a new transmission. The combination would exceed the projected boat value. From a financial perspective the rebuild was the best option. Finding competent professionals to accomplish this task is another challenge.

Take some time to get all the options. Then you have to decide is this the best for me. I feel for your challenge. When you choose your path, go at it boldly, committed.

Good luck.
