Not sure which engine you have (Volvo?), but I pulled my Yanmar 2GMF out by sliding it forward on a piece of 3/4" plywood (rubber motor mounts removed from engine beds) then hoisting it through the companionway hatch opening. It helped to remove the gear box first, if you can do it in the boat ... less weight to deal with.
I hoisted it up on the boat shed rafters, then towed the trailer out a bit, hoisted it clear, towed the boat right out, and lowered the engine into a wheel barrow for transport to the garage. It was a bit scary seeing the engine dangling 12' above the boat shed floor!
