Engine Removal

Question for the group. I'm getting ready to pull the engine out. Can I bring it out through the opening in the cockpit floor or do I need to take it forward into the cabin and then out the companionway? Thanks

Not sure which engine you have (Volvo?), but I pulled my Yanmar 2GMF out by sliding it forward on a piece of 3/4" plywood (rubber motor mounts removed from engine beds) then hoisting it through the companionway hatch opening. It helped to remove the gear box first, if you can do it in the boat ... less weight to deal with.

I hoisted it up on the boat shed rafters, then towed the trailer out a bit, hoisted it clear, towed the boat right out, and lowered the engine into a wheel barrow for transport to the garage. It was a bit scary seeing the engine dangling 12' above the boat shed floor!

I did it similarly. The Volvo couldn't fit through the cockpit hatch. But I
took a few scraps of 2X10 and nailed them to a scrap of plywood to built a
little cradle to scoot the engine onto. I put a 2X4 across the companion way
and used the main sheet to hoist it onto my little cradle. Then I used the
yard crane to lift it out of the boat and onto the ground (the guys weren't
busy and it was cheap). It wasn't scary with the old engine being hoisted
out. But when the new Beta was 12 feet in the air was I was terrified!

Standard procedure is to heavily armor all surfaces the engine could bang on its way out, with layers of flattened boxes.Nicholas H. Walsh P.A.

Thanks for all the insight everyone. I kind of figured it would have to, but would have made my life a little easier if it could have come up through the cockpit. I don't have to worry about damaging the woodwork because it's all being replaced. Just have to protect the floor. I think I'll have to have a party when it's ready to come out. The extra hands and muscle will make things much easier. Hopefully, I'll be ready to pull it in a couple of weeks.
