engine raw water pump leak

Can't believe this hasn't been discussed before, But I can't find it.

2 cylinder Yanmar

My engine raw (sea) water pump has a small leak through weep hole near the shaft. Is this just a problem with a seal, or am I looking at a new pump?

Wilyoung, if it is the same as my 3GM30F it is the shaft bearing that is bad. I don't know if it can be rebuilt. I didn't have an option since I replaced mine in the Out Islands of the Bahamas. Good luck. Best, Ron

Thanks for the info. I'll be pulling the pump and see if I can get the parts.

I think you will find it is almost as expensive to fix the old pump as to replace it. Those weep holes are there as an early warning of shaft seal failure.

I pulled the pump. The screws on the cover plate were so corroded I could get only 4 of the 6 out. Took it to the local dealer and the opinion was that a new one was in order. It's on its way.
