I own a 1986 Catalina 30 just Since July. The kill engine Lever just became difficult to push down and pull up. is this common? Should lever be pushed in when the engine is off? I pushed down hard on teh lever and the fiberglass cracked around it. will that cause any issues.
Inquring minds need to know.

It definitely shouldn’t be that hard to push the lever back in, and you should be able to do it as soon as the engine stops.

You may need to disconnect the cable from each end to see what’s causing the friction.

Yes, it should move easily. Push the lever in as soon as the buzzer sounds, if you leave it out sooner or later you will be buying a new cable.

Trace the cable through its path to the engine. Look for sharp bends. The cable may need lubrication, a few drops of oil or replacing. Replacing the cable is not a technically difficult task, although it may require you to be a contortionist to run the cable.

According to Mack Boring (Major Yammie dealer) the.cable needs lubrication from time to time. I found that I could put a few drops of light oil on the cable while it is out and then work it in and out and repeat. Mine wasn't that bad. MB Rx'ed taking the whole inner cable out to lubricate. That can be a difficult job. At that point I'd be thinking replacement and do regular lubrication to maintain it.

Disconnect from engine end and test if it is hard to pull or push. It is easy to replace. I replaced mine as the handle end broke. I had not realized that it was hard to pull until I installed the new one. The length of the cable is marked on the cable, you will see it after you remove it. PM me if you need a source to buy from. Catalina Direct has the wrong size. Ask me how I know.

While we're here I'd like to ask maybe a silly question but but I don't know the answer and I am curious. Does the manufacture call it a engine kill lever or a fuel shutoff lever? Just my opinion but besides the cable repair the fiberglass should also be repaired at this time.
