I recently purchased a 1979 27' Hunter, Cherubini model. The boat is great, but am having a peculiar problem. It seems that after sailing on a starboard tack, when we turn the engine on, we can not get water thru the intake, at least not promptly-sometimes it takes several tries. Has anyone else experienced this problem, found a solution? When we are on a port tack, no problem. We think that the intake through hull fitting is coming out of the water when the boat is on a starboard tack and then when it levels a vacuum has been created which prevents water from entering the intake. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

Interesting!

Never heard that one. The engine thru-hull on my H37C is very close to the centerline. You'd have to be sailing with the boom in the water to expose it. Cannot imagine how the tack would affect it. Some kind of turbulence I suppose. If you set sail and then immediately kill the engine and close the thru-hull does it solve the problem? Is your thru-hull installed backwards(the grate-like opening should be facing forward)? Let us know how you fix this.

I have a 78 H27

The intake thru hull is on the starboard side. However, I can't imagine heeling to the point where the intake comes out of the water although I'm sure it is possible. When on starboard tack and wanting to start the engine try lossing up on the sails for a time to reduce heel to make sure intake is wet. If that doesn't work chen to make sure the grate on the intake is not clogged. Mine had been painted over to the point the intake area had been reduced. I had to scrape the excess paint off to open it up. Post back what you find out. Good luck.

Check the impeller

Your note did not indicate that you had checked the impeller in the water pump. It may be barely working and therefore only pumping well on the tack when it barely has to pump. I have only had a Hunter 27 for one season but I had to change the impeller on a trip when it completely failed to pump. I was lucky because the former owner left me with set of spare parts.

Impeller or thru-hull or hose

The other respondents are correct; there is no way you are exposing the intake by heeling as the intake is only about a foot from the center line. I would suggest checking the thru hull as you may have ingested some plastic or a marine critter (I had some strange worm living in mine and had to get it out with a screwdriver!). The impeller could also be just barely working and the additional pressure head required on heeling could be more than it can bear. One last suggestion - if you are judging the engine "getting water" by the exhaust, could it be the exhaust hose is cracked and the water DOES get through engine but then drains into the bilge through a cracked exhaust hose? I would check the hose as they do tend to rot with time.
