All seriousness aside..........

Fred, looking at this existentialistically, I can only conclude you ARE alive and you are looking forward to your next sail and gathering in someone's cockpit. Possibly it might be mine.

Just a suggestion, guys

Please look at the date the letter was originally written (1975). Let's not apply a time warp to this discussion. Some prefer all the goodies and some like to do otherwise. It's like dodgers. I recommend having it very low so you can see above it and not have to look through plastic all day. Some like them tall, because they don't hit their head every time they go below. And some are just taller folks. Nice part is we can all get out there and enjoy ourselves and each other.

Why in your profile does it say Olcott, WI on post #25 and Alcott, NY on post #34. No big deal, just wondering. Rob Hessenius

Joe, I think if you click the send email

spot, it'll not give you my email but give you a place to write a note and send it to me. The server knows the email, but doesn't give it out. Try it again. Anyone else can help out here???

higgs, try this....

it's a forward-looking sonar with a claimed range of 1000 feet. It finds fish, so a shipping container shouldn't be much of a challenge. This would give you about 2 minutes warning - the description doesn't mention any alarm, so you'd have to keep a pretty good eye on the screen - plenty of time to evade. If it had an alarm that could be hooked up to the autopilot, even better. I've always wondered just how many shipping containers are actually floating around out there. Even if you DO encounter one, it seems like you'd have to hit it pretty much at right angles to seriously damage your boat. My fantasy: I'm sailing to Hawaii, and 5 miles from the harbor, I encounter a container. I take it in tow, which (I think) gives me salvage rights, bring it to the harbor, open it and find it full of 80" plasma TVs, all in perfect condition. Meet me on eBay, I'll give you a good deal. :) Cheers, Bob s/v X SAIL R 8

My home port has changed since I registered on the site. I have long ago forgotten my user ID/password to make proper changes so I just do it manually for each post I make. Olcott is correct. Alcott was a typo.

Luddites!

I'll tell you what...why don't you luddites snail mail your replies into this thread after writing them out in longhand. This PC stuff works but it certainly isn't necessary for good communication. <g>
