Electric Fuel Pump Replacement

Seems like I've been asking alot of questions of this forum lately. Either I'm inept or my boat is falling apart! I have a 1986 Cat 30 w/the Universal 25/21 Hp. motor. I thought I had the wrong prop on it since the best I ever saw was 2000 RPM and about 6 knots. I think either the prop is fouled not or my original proplem is getting worse as I'm down to 1700 RPM and 4.5 Knots (if the wind is calm) Some one suggested that in neutral I should be able to max out on the govenor at about 3000 RPM-All I could get is 2500 RPM. The motor seems to run good and there is no smoke save a trace of white to gray stuff. The speed lever moves through the full range but once the motor reaches 1700 RPM (in gear) I can continue to move the lever another 2 inches but nothing happens. The fact that their is no black smoke leads me to believe that I'm not getting enough fuel. New filters and line have no effect. The electric fuel pump is original so that is my next suspect. Anyone know of a replacement that I can get at Auto Zone or NAPA to avoid paying thru the nose? Thanks in advance Tim

Low RPM

Are you sure the throttle is opening all the way? Another thing to check is the air filter, which is just a piece of foam, that can block the intake. I haven't replaced my fuel pump, but I did read on the web that you can buy a fuel pump at NAPA, part #BK 610-1011 for about one boat unit. BTW, did you check the strainer on the bottom of the fuel pump?

LOW RPMS

Tim ... We had a similar problem with a 1 cyl Yanmar. Changed every filter, rebuilt the injector, adjusted the linkage, replaced fuel lines. NOTHING worked. Until we pulled the head off and found the exhaust port to be 90% clogged with carbon !!!!!!!! Reamed it out ... rebuilt the head while it was off and its is like a new engine!!! This may not be your problem, but your symptoms are VERY similar!!! Good Luck !!!

throttle cable

Tim, Is there something loose on your throttle cable? Have someone move it and make sure that the cable is not slipping in it's restraints and that it is actually moving the throttle rod. r.w.landau

Fuel problem

There are two additional places to check as least on my 1983 C-30. Did you clean the filter in th bottom of the electric fuel pump? Also older boats at least thru 1983 had a sock on the end of the pick up tube in the fuel tank that clogs up and causes the engine to act like the main filters are plugged. If you think this is the problem, respond and I'll tell you how to remove the sock.

Thanks for the info Chris

Sounds like you might have the insight on this that I was lacking. I was not aware of a screen or filter on the electric fuel pump itself. How do you access it? Also, mine is an '86 but the fuel pick-up is probably worth looking into so that info would be appreciated as well. Thanks again Tim

Electric Fuel Pump Filter & Tank Sock

The pump, if the same as mine, has a wrench fitting on the bottom. Look carefully at the pump and you will see that the bottom cap comes off with about a 1/4 turn. I don't remember which way. Clean the filter with proper solvent and reinstall. I usually use mineral spirits. To check for the present of a sock on the fuel pick up tube. Remove fuel pickup hose from the tank fitting. Unscrew the tank fitting and slowly lift the fitting out of the tank. There should be a tube pressed into the bottom of the fitting. Grab the tube and contine to slowly pull the tube out of the tank. If there is a sock present, you will encounter resistance when the tube is about 3/4 out. Continue to pull the tube out and the sock should slide off into the tank. I tried to fish mine out without success. The "fuel polisher" said the sock should not present a problem and has not. If the sock is causing the problem, you should have your tank and fuel cleaned. Good Luck. Let me know if this works. cward@rangeresources.com
