I have a recently bought a 94' Hunter 26. I have a question about the electrical panel on the boat. The last switch on the panel says ACC. What does that switch do? The boat came with two batteries but one has a shorted cell so I need to replace it. Can anyone recommend a battery? Should I get a class 27 (?) or gel cell. I would also like to add a volt/amp meter, there is a four-outlet box cut into the bulkhead and wired to the 110V shore power (I don’t think I will need.) next to the house panel. This weekend I was looking at the wiring and was appalled at the hatchet job in the back up the boat. The previous owner had wired the second battery to only two DC connections, one for a Loran (which I won’t use, I’m a lake sailor, I guess) and the other for an old Magellan GPS (I can’t get to work). The motor a Honda 8hp Four Stroke has a charge output that was connected to only the main battery. Should I add a combiner or switch to switch between batteries. I was also looking on the Internet at the Siemens RV Solar Power kits (50, 75, 100 watt kits), does anybody have any knowledge on setting up solar on a H26. I would like to keep the batteries charged while the boat is bobbing around on the lake this summer. It will be on a buoy and not at a slip, so it will be moving around a far amount and I need to take that into consideration. Thanks, Carl Bader S/V Wind Shadow

ACC

I had the same question, never asked here so I openen the panel and found out that it had nothing wired to it. Check yours, I also bought mine used. Im also planning on changing the battery, mine has a small marine (acid) and im going with gel. Sailnet/Westmarine has a pannel that has 3 switches, a volt meter for monitoring 2 batteries, plus a lighter adapter thing, it runs for like 33 bucks. My pannel has the switches all wobly so im going to replace it when I do my super duper project in the upcoming weeks. It may be a good idea to change it, if its like mine, since im going to redo the thing. Write to carlos@casablancapr.com so we can trade pictures and see how we came out :). Fair Winds Carlitos S/V Martina PS Check the photo forum, one of the guys installed an autopilot on a 24(i think) and he installed the same panel im gonna use. Looks cool.

Hunter 26 electrical diagram

Carl; I purchased a 95 Hunter 26 last summer from an electrician that had added a 6 unit curcuit breaker panel to the existing Hunter 5 fuse electrical panel. I just added 2 electronic instruments and have been through his wiring. His work is a piece of art. He installed a gel battery, shore power, a smart battery charger and a 110v. outlet. There is a volt meter, amp meter, use meters and charge meter. I also have a Honda 9.9 hp outboard with the charging curciut. The best part is he fully diagramed it out!! If you would like a copy of this diagram contact me by e-mail at rebaray@theofficenet.com with your snail mail address and I will forward a copy of this print. Good Luck, Ray.

Information

Carl; Acc stands for accessory. You can hook up one item to the panel for example VHF, instruments, etc.. As for the batteries, I use deep cycle marine battery by Interstate but there are other good ones out there too. As for the battery, I would recommend either a 24 or 27 series but remember that the 27 is a larger battery and you will need to buy the battery box for that size as the one for the 24 will not accomodate it. I would recommend that you install a battery selector for Batt 1, Batt 2 or all. Make sure it has the quick field disconnect if you should accidentlaly switch the selector while the engine is running. Otherwise, switching while the engine is runnign could damage the charging unit in an engine. I like to wire the engine to the common so when you tune the battery selector off, it cannot be started period. Since you are wired up for shore power , why not add an ac powered battery charger and hook it direct to your AC distribution panel. As for the Loran, it is history in my books. Throw it away. You may want to get a hand held GPS but should you get the chart plotter type, make sure it is the grey scale if using outside as the color scale is hard to see in sunlight. Crazy Dave Condon

Can I see?

Ray Any chance you could put that diagram on line? There might be several 26ers out there (including me) that are interested in rewiring the boat. Whoever did mine did a messy job. Tom/Ft Worth

TOM, you can peek.

Tom, I have no way to post the diagram on this form so I need your mailing address to send you a copy. My e-mail is listed prior so please respond. Then you could post it. ray
