I revamped my side mount wheel brake today. Waited for the knob to show up. It cost $2.05 at Acklands. The rest are all SS parts except the galvanized clamping device that the previous owner had. I also made a grommet out of some left over Nylatron GSM.

Pic#4 is the knob that applies/releases brake pressure

It is now easy to apply break pressure to the shaft with the knob. I could not move the rudder at all by hand. Haven't tried it on the water yet but it seems like it will work and easy to use.

That looks so much better than the solution your boat came with and I am sure it will do the job well.
A couple of dollars spent compared to about $500 for the shaft-replacement solution I went through.
However, it's really a practical addition in my opinion and I am very glad to have a steering brake.
