Heading off on a trip and I want to rip some of my daughters DVD's onto a hard drive so we can bring them with us and stream them to her iPad.

It seems as if Hollywood would prefer me to buy the movies all over again in digital format. I already PAID for these movies and just want to watch them on an iPad not the TV. Sheessh...:cussing:

So which DVD ripping software do you use and trust. Seems like a lot of snake oil out there.....

We photographers don't really care for people copying our work, either. It's how we make a living. And how we pay others to upgrade our boats.

Digital rights allows you to copy your own property for your own use. Not for distribution or sale. With that, check Handbrake. There are a number of free applications on the web, but this one is highly recommended.

As a photographer myself I don't like people stealing my work. But if I have already been paid for it the owner can do with it what they want short of re-selling it. I am not re-selling these movies they are for my own use... BIG DIFFERENCE.....

The point here is that I already PAID Hollywood for these products! I just want to be able to view them on the iPad too.... Why is it that I can rip all my CD's into my computer, through iTunes, and listen to them on my iPad, phone, iPod etc. but not the movies I paid for just like the CD's I paid for???

I have ripped almost 1500 CD's into my computer and listen to them on all of my personal devices. The CD's now sit in storage boxes unless I want to do some audiophile level listening..

BTW it is 100% legal to make a copy for yourself, which is exactly what and how these will be used. I am not stealing anything all these movies have been bought and paid for by my wife & I. We just don't want to lug along an iPad AND a portable DVD player and the physical DVD's for our daughter on this trip...

We are really put off that the movie industry would prefer that we buy the product a second time just to watch it on the iPad vs any one of our TV's or other DVD players. What makes an iPad so special that they want me to pay for the product a SECOND TIME!!!???? That to me is 100% OFFENSIVE and a rather unethical way of doing business...

So, without any more misguided nit-picking on something I want to do that is 100% LEGAL, which DVD ripping software do you guys use??

I don't necessarily want a free software if it is not the best software. I want an excellent software that is fast and easy to use. I have no qualms paying for this type of software.

I have actually looked at Handbrake but read some reports that it installs malware. Does it??? I do not want that, if that is why its free.....

Free, open source software is the most peer-reviewed stuff you can get.

Just perform your due diligence.

I use Wondershare DVD Ripper Platinum. It works great I have ripped almost 1 TB's of movies onto an external HD that I take along when we go to HI for the winter and live on our 42' sailboat. I got tired of dragging along all the DVD's. And yes it is legal to make copies of DVD's that you have bought for personnel use. I have used Wondershare for years and I have never found any DVD that it would not rip.

I use DVD Cloner but I don't get good consistent results. About a third of the DVDs burned are bad.

Thanks for the heads up on that one!!
You're welcome. Let me know if you get something that works. I need to dump this program. I finally told the company "why would I upgrade again? I continue to do it hoping the next version will work better and they haven't." They gave me some things to try, which I already have, so I am giving up.

So I got a PM and the questions were how is the quality and will it work on a TV and not just a computer.

A: The quality is a good as if you had the original DVD in your DVD player.

B: Will it work on a TV. Yes I take my external HD and plug the USB cable directly into my 60 inch Samsung smart TV here at the house or my 27 inch TV on the boat, open up the source select the folder labeled as movies select which movie we want to watch in that folder hit select and it starts playing on the TV screen.

I bought my Wondershare DVD ripper software back in 2010 and paid $49.95. There is a great you tube video on how to get started that walks you through how to set it up, which format to rip them in, are you using Windows or Mac etc. It is worth watching. I get offers to update all the time but have never found it needed.

I've been using Handbrake with no issues for some time - no malware was downloaded but get it somewhere reputable

Okay here's what I did:

Downloaded Handbrake (did not get any malware), Wondershare and WinX DVD Platinum. I tried them all and liked WinX DVD the best so I bought the full version for $39.95. I would say Wondershare is great too but when it came to speed the WinX DVD was a bit faster. For free Handbrake is really good but my time was worth more than the price.. We have lots of movies to rip so speed was critical...

So far it has ripped every movie, including the tough Disney ones, and has done so with good speed. I can rip one about every 20-35 minutes.

Here's what I have also done:

Seeing as the boat often lacks cell range or wi-fi we bought a WD My Passsport Wi-Fi 2 Terabyte Wireless Hard Drive. There are other brands such as Lacie etc. but we wanted 2TB so the options in a wi-fi / wireless hard drive were a bit more limited.

Some wireless hard drives are solid state drives but the GB sizes are limited. This is a spinning drive. The WD My Passport Wireless hard drive allows you to stream movies, video, photos etc. to multiple devises at one time. So far we have streamed three different movies to three separate devices without any buffering or hiccups.. Pretty cool... :)

You simply load an app onto the iPad, tablet, phone computer etc., log onto the hard drives wi-fi network, open it, and begin streaming. The batteries last about 6 hours and it can be charged/run through a 12V USB charge adapter.

This should be a great fit for our upcoming charter/flights & travel with three kids!!

Glad you found something you like. I may need to upgrade my Seagate 1 TB External HD as I am running out of space.

This is a small portable that is also wireless/wi-fi/battery powered. They make them in up to 2TB but they cost about double what a standard non-wi-fi/wireless one does.. If you need portable & wi-fi, like for an iPad, they are very cool..

I would not need a wireless, but may upgrade to a 2 TB.
