I have a Pearson 303,1985 and am tired of chasing the main when we drop it. We are thinking About a Dutchman but it is recomened that we change our toping lift to a halyard type. More Money. I like the idea of the lazyjacks. Less cost, simpler install. What do you have on your boat??

When I needed a new main I decided to go with the lDutchman. I had lazy jacks previously and got tired of having to go forward to loosen them when underway. My full batten main would also tend to get caught in them when raising the sail. Practical sailor recommends the Dutchman over both the stack pack and Lazy jacks. I also had the strong track installed at the same time. So far I'm happy with my decision.

This is one of those "you get what you pay for" items. Lazy jacks will serve your purpose but a properly installed and aligned Dutchman will be less of a headache and work better. The only add-on is the endless loop topping lift which you can use to easily adjust the Dutchman and eliminate any chafe when the sail is up.

My topping lift is adjusted at my boom. The topping lift lenth is fixed from the top of the mast to the aft end of the boom. My sailmaker tells me I need to replace the existing topping lift. I need a block at the top of the mast and then run a halyard for the new topping lift. Whats a endless loop topping lift?
Thanks Gary

We are on our fourth sail with a Dutchman. We love it. The latest version of the Dutchman is very easy to adjust and stays in the sail when you remove the sail. It does not need re-adjusting each year as the older versions do. It does need a halyard type of topping lift. If your mast has an empty halyard block in the mast, as most late Pearsons with an Isomat mast, then running a new topping lift is not difficult. The older versions of the Dutchman are still avaliable but this new version is far better.

My 1983 Pearson 37 came with lazy jacks from PO. I've never had any problems with the set up.
