Brian where is the other anchoring spot in Dana? I was only aware of the one at the one over by the Museum.

You can leave your boat for an hour at Dana? When I called last year she indicated that someone had to remain with the boat at all times.

Island White does not require permission and is a really nice anchorage. Better than the nearby moorings that are exposed to the swells from the breakwater opening. We got there late for 4th of July last year and we were anchored in 40'.

Do you need permission in Carrillo? That question came up at last months club meeting.

We've anchored in the channel at Redondo behind the breakwater without any hassles or permission.

What club meeting was that? I asked the question on this forum earlier.

Re: Redondo--You do need to check in at the Harbor Patrol dock upon arrival and register your stay with them. There is a three night maximum stay at anchor. I got this directly from the officer in the harbor patrol office in August of last year.

As for Oil Island White: It's a nice anchorage but don't expect it to be tranquil during the summer months. It can get quite congested. Plus, there are lots of powerboats flying around, sometimes buzzing the area and throwing up a wake. In the off season it's pretty decent, though.

The second anchorage at Dana is just inside the entrance between the bait barge and fuel dock, obviously not as quiet but closer to Turk's.
The harbor patrol isn't interested in preventing visiting boats from going to shore for food and supplies, the problem was people trying to live aboard by moving between the 3 small free anchorage areas. I've heard you can leave the boat for either 1 or 3 hrs. unattended. However I feel sure if you called them and said you were going to Disneyland for the day they wouldn't have a problem with a legitimate "short term" visitor.
This article from the log explains how the problem developed after the closure of the free anchorage in San Diego. The closure unleashed a veritable fleet of "problem" vessels to pillage the coast, there's half a dozen at the impound dock right now.

That was at the Marina Del Rey Sunday Sailors. They are planning a trip May 15 to King Harbor.
