dripless shaft seal

I am considering installing a dripless shaft seal on my 1999 C320. The yard manager has recommended a "Strong Seal", I've noticed most of the postings mention a PSS seal. I'd like to hear from owners that have either one and what their experience has been.

pyi versus strong seal

Hands down the PYI PSS seal is the best on the market. The shop where I work has installed well over a hundred PSS seals in the last ten years without comebacks. In a number of cases we have replaced existing strong seals. Excellent tech support at (800) 523-7558

Also investigating

I am also looking into a shaft seal for my 310. Practical Sailor did a review of them on November 15, 2000, you can probably down load the article from the website. The PYI and Lasdrop are comprable but the mounting system for the Lasdrop sounds better and I think I'm going with it. The real kicker is the installed cost. Not wanting to make the time to do it myself I've had quotes of $400 to $1,100 for the seal and installation so beware.

dripless seal

I have had a PYI dripless seal for three seasons. It took a bit of adjusting at first but now doesn't drip at all. One concern I have heard of is that a drip less shaft is not "supported" in the middle by the usual packing fitting - it is only fixed at each end ie. at transmission and cutlass bearing as such a bronze shaft which has a bit more flex than a ss shaft has been known to vibrate in the shaft tube. It has happened to me - I do not think it causes any damage but the noise amplified through the hull sure scares you. It happens when under power at full speed, once you throttle back it stops. Ihave had it happen about once each season. Otherwise I think the PYI pss? drip less seal is great. (ps put a hose clamp on your prop shaft abount a 1/4 " ahead of the ss disk, if the set screws which hold the disk fail the hose clamp stops the disk from moving forward, otherwise you will get alot of water coming in.

I have a PSS. Fantastic. When I asked for info in this forum before installing it someone replied that it was so good their bilge only collected dust. They were right !

Irwin you are correct

about " puting a hose clamp on your prop shaft just above the ss disk, if the set screws which hold the disk fail the hose clamp stops the disk from moving forward"....I just wouldn't do it 1/4" up, I would have it touching....I don't want that stainless Steel donut moving at all!! I had the PSS on my old boat and it was great!!....I highly recommend it ...BUT !!....after 7 years then set screws on that stainless Steel donut must have loosened (or the bronze shaft wore?)..and that donut "shimmied" up the shaft while running one day, allowing water to start coming in the boat!! While I was motoring across Long Island Sound...my girlfreind went down below for a minute and yelled up...."Honey is there supposed to be water coming out over the lip of the engine compartment?" Yikes... HORROR! I flicked on the bilge pump and it took care of the incoming water..But It took a *while* for me to figure out that it wasn't any of the thru hulls , but rather where the shaft seal was.....(not very good access to that on my old boat....I had to be a contortionist)........ But long story short....I slid that "donut" back down the shaft compressing the "bellows", tightened them back down and everything was better.......... So I believe Irwins suggestion is mandatory......... Would I use the PSS again?....yes...no problem.... Do I have it on my new '99 Cat 36?.....No...(because of the installation hassle)....What I did was just replace the existing stuffing box flax with a new high tech material called GFO® fiber dripless packing.....it works great....no drips this 1st year!!....and it costs under $20 !!
