I am a first time boat owner (Catalina 27) who has an older RACOR model 200FG with the clear bowl at the bottom. I can see quite a bit of sediment that needs to be drained. If I loosen/depress the nipple and drain the gunk, will air be introduced to the filter housing? Can I just fill the filter with fresh diesel without having to bleed? I have a Universal Model M-18 (14hp) that I'm sure is not self bleeding like the new Westerbekes. Guess I have a little stage fright with having to bleed my engine for the first time if in fact I will need to. I guess my filter is about the same height as my fuel tank but I think the end of the fuel pick up tube is below the lowest level of the fuel filter drain.

Use two clips on the in and out fuel line
like vice grips with additional pieces of rubber between the hose and vice grips, like a hemostat. Minimizes the amount of air on each side of the filter, especially if you don't have an external fuel pump. Like hemostats. Not my idea, from a good friend and C34 maxi-contributor, Ron Hill. Most of us put it off for the same reason, but it's a lot easier than they make it out to be. Do it on a day when you DO NOT ABSOLUTELY HAVE TO BE ANYWHERE ELSE. This takes the pressure off...
You can also drain the crud out by opening the top vent and the bottom screw leaving the fuel ON. That's what the vent is for. Close the bottom one first, fill up the filter bowl and close the vent.

Your attached photo is very helpful. The only valve I have is right at the top of the tank. The line then goes into the Racor filter. A second line comes out the filter and runs to to fuel lift pump. I think I will put a couple small valves on my wish list because it seems like a good addition and makes life much less complicated.
