Drain hole in the keel.

Hi
I'm back with another newbie question.

The Albin Vega has a drain hole at the bottom of the keel. Although I've owned the boat for about 18 months now I've not tried to open this yet. As my boat is now in the boat yard for the winter I was thinking it might be a good idea to open it. Should I? Is there any advice you'd give (apart from remembering to close it again before putting the boat back in the water!)?

Questions that cross my mind are Do these plugs tend to unscrew fairly easily? How easy are they to put back? When putting them back do you put anything round the threads to ensure the seal is water tight? Do folks leave these open all winter and if so have they had any problems with small creatures making a home in their boat?

Thanks

Mark

Mark,
I haul-out every year and remove the plug to completely dry out the bilge
area. Zama\'s turns easily; There is a center slot for a large-blade
screwdriver on my plug - soft-metal, use the right tool!. Critter proof with a
small piece of window screen stuffed in the holw. When prepping the boat in
the Spring, I appreciate being able to send rinse water out the opening.
Reinstall is simple...I usually use pipe thread tape and a dab of Life-Seal.
The has never been a problem with leakage.
Put that plug some place really safe and memorable. I never let it off
the boat.
Best,
Paul

Hi Mark - like others I remove the drain plug when the boat comes ashore in the Autumn. I have never used any sealant apart from a light greasing when replacing in the Spring and never had a problem in the 29 years I have owned \'Jenavive\'. Steve Birch had some replacement plugs at one time. They are a special fine thread and need to be of gunmetal or similar.

We don\'t seem to have a problem with small \'critters\' in Kent.
Regards Mike

Not easy especially if you are single handed, I tend to drop the sail through the forehatch and leave it there until I can sort it out. Along a marina berth is easiest but it can get folded after a fashion by flaking it down between the berths from engine cover to bow berths.Trying to fold on deck in any sort of wind is a waste of time.

Have to change out my foresail.
No longer have the grass to help me fold sails.

Any tips/tricks?

Hi folks,
Thanks for all the advice. I'll find a big screwdriver and take the plug out when I next go to the boat (hopefully tomorrow).
Thanks.

Perhaps you could fold it like a hanked on sail. Clip the luff to the forestay with a couple of pony clamps and stretch the clew out along the side deck. Craig
