Quick... close the drapes, crank up the heat, shut your eyes for a moment and pretend it's August. You just fought your way close hauled through some brisk winds, rails in the water with plenty of weather helm. But now you're tucked into your favorite cove, sails flaked, hook set, not a ripple on the water. Sounds like some liquid refreshment is in order! What do you reach for at the end of a great day of summer sailing? An ice cold brew, a big red wine, the sailor's tradition of rum, or a bottle of fresh, cold water? Order up! Tell us about your favorite then vote in the Quick Quiz at the bottom of the home page.

depends.....

iut depends on what/where/why I'm sailing. If it is a simple daysail on a hot summer's day then the coldest (a MUST) Heineken in the ice box is the drink de jour. If it has been a long day sailing on vacation from one port to another, then I must have a Red Stripe. It makes me feel like I'm in Jamaica. However.....if we just finished a big race, It would definately be Newcastle Brown Ale....BUT if we lost real bad, our skipper gives us old, warm ,flat Schafer. (we try not to lose too much...)

Warm Milk!

Well - last summer we were blessed with a 5 month-old boy by the time August rolled around...warm milk would be the beverage of choice!! He made it out for 3 over-nighters on our Catalina 30! And this summer....we are blessed yet again with another that is due to arrive by the end of July!! More Milk please!!!

There's nothing more refreshing...

Than a nice cold soft drink. For some reason, a soft drink, like a diet coke, or sprite, or anything of that nature, just hits the spot. Don't know why, but it does. Water is too bland and beer/wine gets me too relaxed. ;D

Tanqueray & Tonic!!

I'd tell you how many of the 1.75 liter bottles we go through each season, but I'd be embarassed..... In my defense, we DO spend a lot of time aboard and our friends DO help some...

It's funny...

I've always thought that gin tastes like soapy water. Anyway, I like my Tortuga Rum. Straight up or in a nice hot cup of coffee. Cheers, Bob

Depends on Time of Day

In the morning - fresh brewed coffee makes the day off to an exciting start. Later on I prefer Diet Pepsi - refreshing yet more flavorful than water and doesn't reduce my ability to focus.

Sundfowners

At the end of the day, anchor down, sun slowly slipping into the sea to the west, scotch on the rocks. If it is really hot and windless and thirst is great, a gin and tonic does nicely.

Underway and at Anchor

Generally under way, it's cold bottled water for me. Especially, for those situations where I'm working a little harder: i.e. if the it's hot, the wind is up, racing, pushing to make the next port. While social sailing and entertaining, I may have a beer, but recognize that I'm in command and like to keep my facilities sharp. Now, when we're in the slip or at anchor, I developed quite the taste this summer for Mount Gay rum. With Coke, OJ, lemonade, it's pretty flexible and doesn't leave me hurting the next morning. Relaxing under the stars with the admiral generally calls for a bottle of merlot. T J

We freeze water in twenty ounce soda bottles

and use those for the ice in the ice box and as our drinking water. At anchor, with supper, we enjoy a nice bottle of wine. Sometimes when it gets a little stormy while at anchor a glass of port is pleasing.

You're all wrong, let me tell you how it is

In the hot humid summer months in Florida, Fruit Juice hits the spot! Wine is great, beer is great, but for this heat, a quest to find the perfect blend is in order. Maybe after taking care of thirst with Gatorade or water, and an adult beverage is required, I have created the perfect blend: On the rocks, Coconut rum & Pineapple/Mango Juice. For variation or added potency or to feel more like a sailor or a pirate, add a splash of Meyers Dark or Appleton Dark or you can go more fufu with a splash of cranberry juice. Careful, this stuff is like candy. Captn. Morgan Parrot Bay Coconut Rum comes in plastic bottles that are perfect for sailboats and sailboat freezers.

Brothers don't agree

A couple of years ago my brother from VT and I from OH sailed a Catalina 32 for a week on Lake Champlain. When we boarded he loaded on a case of French wine. I had a case of Serenac pale ale. After sailing on the weekends on my little O'Day 22 nothing seems to beat a Red Stripe.

It doesn't get any better than

dropping the hook on the east side of Little Whaleboat, stretch out on the cockpit seat, feet up,crack open a cold Heineken(better yet Ipswich if ya got 'em!).Put on some nice easy jazz or classical, and watch the sun drop. Right about now,the first mate appears with the cheese and snack plate. Maine-the way life should be!

Plenty of ice water on a hot day on the water

I usually bring plenty of ice water when I'm out there sailing on hot summer days. I've been drinking this stuff called Orange Cappuccino for years now, and I'm hooked on it. I keep a good supply of it on the boat as well as at the house. On rare occasions, I add a little Captain Morgans in this coffee when I'm at home, but as a general rule, I'm not much of a drinker unless it's water.

Tim's right, another way to get there...

Since I'm kind of a Rum snob (when I can afford to be, that is) I don't go for the flavored stuff. Instead I buy pinya colada juice and Mango juice (I like the boxed type for sailing). mix equal amounts over ice & yum! The Rum? Pussers.
