I'm using the big Hi-Capacity DampRid brand moisture-absorbing bucket in the boat while on the hard. It's now well below freezing here, and I'm wondering if there is potential for the absorbed water to freeze and crack the plastic bucket - which could then leak following thaw. There doesn't seem to be any mention of this on DampRid's web site, nor in the HOW archives. I assume the calcium chloride absorbant lowers the freezing temperature, but am not sure. Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

Water can freeze but I doubt it..

would split the bucket as ther is room for it to expand upward..

calcium chloride/ water solution

is used as wheel weights in heavy equipment and is better for deicing sidewalks than is sodium chloride. And plastic buckets with water will freeze from the top down and will burst the bottom.

I have the "normal" damp rid on the boat. Checked it yesterday - the temp was 10F. The goo was still liquid. If you mean by the "high capacity tub" the one with a paper cover on it that you don't remove, it has some sort of mixture inside it similar to (or actually) peat moss. It will freeze, and will expand, and likley burst the tub. so - place it in the galley sink and you'll be cool when the eventual thaw happens.

Damp Rid

I have used Damp Rid in the past. I used the size that would fit into a standard two gallon bucket. Even if the plastic tub cracked, the leak was contained by the bucket. There was never enough water collected to risk cracking the bucket, even if the plastic tub let go. Randy
