We are planning on taking our trip down the Tenn-Tom waterway from KY lake to Mobile in Oct.( don't want to make the trip in Jan) we plan on messing about in the area around Mobile until near thanksgiving. We want to leave the boat in the area until after Christmas when we head out for the keys. Any suggestions for a reasonable marina that is safe?

take a look at Fair hope marina its only 6 dollars a foot on the eastern shore at the head of the bay...no showers, no laundry, but has water and electric....or go to Turners marina on the west shore by dog river it has it all and a west marine next door ......or if you belong to a yacht club check and see if Fair hope yacht club has reciprocal agreement don't use Eastern shore for any reason to many bad reports from it to bother with

Or... Go a little farther

Mobile Bay is not exactly the prettiest area on the gulf, and you will still be about 20 miles from the beach/ gulf.

You might try going over to Pensacola Beach (another 60 miles past Mobile). Sabine Marina is a decent place to stay and is an easy walk to the beach and entertainment areas.

The local beaches and sailing are beautiful.

On Dog River, you will find Dog River Marina and Turner Marine, next door to each other, with both about the same rates. There are a few other docking options on Dog River but these are probably what your looking for. Not sure what you are looking for that is "safe". There is a small live-aboard community at Turner Marine. Dog River Marina is more of a working yard. There isn't anything in Mobile proper. BTW We're currently in Demopolis and will probably be heading down river in October. Chuck

We have ours at Yacht Harbor in Pensacola. Awesome management, they keep a close watch on things, floating docks, newer construction. Top notch marina. The same owners have Island Cove and Palm Harbor, both great marinas. www.pensacolamarinas.com

If you are in the Mobile area, go to Turner Marine at Dog River. We went down Tenn-Tom from Lighthouse Landing, left on October 10, 2013 and got mast back up at Turner. October is a nice month to make the trip down. You will still experience some cool weather and probably some rain as we did. Turner is a favorite destination marina. They are a family owned business and Roger and his crew are very accomodating. We got in after dark, about 8:30 PM, and Roger met us at the dock and helped us tie up. They have a loaner car and just went out of the way to make our transition easy. We stayed about 3 days, then moved on farther east to Panama City before coming home to Clarksville on Oct 31 for a month before resuming our cruise.

In 2007 I, and 3 others, took a CaboRico 38 down from Lighthouse Landing and we went to Fairhope on the eastern shore. The ad in the cruising guide made it appear that Fairhope was within walking distance of the marina. It wasn't close and we had to rent a car while awaiting a crew change. The water was also thinner on that side. We didn't have to take the mast down on the CaboRico, so we didn't need any services other than fuel in Fairhope. Having stayed at both, my preference is Turner.

We ended up at Fisherman's Village at Punta Gorda for the winter and returned to Turner in early March, having left PGI on March 1. We got the mast down, had some engine work done and got set for our return to Lighthouse Landing arriving March 27, 2014. They are a full service marina (fuel is next door accessed from Dog River direct) and we felt very safe while staying there. We were there about a week in the spring waiting for winds to subside so we could lower the mast. Over the winter someone wrecked the loaner car so no loaner. We got a rental one delivered from Enterprise.

Their prices are reasonable, they are honest, and did excellent work. I would highly recommend them.

We were going to venture out in the gulf away from mobile. We were looking for a place to leave the boat while we returned home for a month.
