Dock Find

So I'm just floating around and I see a boat that I'm not familiar with laying at a private dock in Buford Georgia. It's a Sovereign Antares 7 meter. Tied up for a couple of years who would think. Walked up the dock and knocked on the door and asked the good Doctor if it was for sale. Take it for a sail and if you like it you can have it.

The gift being in the water for 9 years I think maybe I take any project money set aside and see a psychiatrist. Being one and forced into the dilemma of a free ham sandwich I motor sail the boat to the boatyard at Aqualand.

It turns out in the end to be a scenario similar to finding a good dog at the pound. Two weeks in the yard, back in the water cleaned up with a refinished bottom, a rub down and though the paint and novelty inevitably wares off some finds turn out OK.

Sovereigns though heavy are (were) seemingly stable, well equipped and well built little boats.

Bottom before and after.

Hello ZMiller,

Welcome to the SBO forums and congratulations on your new boat.
A "project" that takes only two weeks to get into good looking shape is a true gem! Have you looked on sailboatdata.com for information on your boat? It says your Sovereign is related to the S2 yacht company. The shallow keel will be useful in shallow water. The boat may seem tender until you get accustomed to its heeling characteristics. To find a 23 foot boat with an enclosed head is a real plus!
Best wishes as you sail your "find"!

Now CloudDiver, your in San Diego and I'm stuck on a lake where to get here you have to find and then step into a way-back machine. Making matters worse here, there is no place to sail too let alone sail back from.

You have almost the best sailing weather in the world and probably the best pizza as well.

Years ago while standing on the roof of my office on Fern, watering my plants and looking out over the water I can remember wishing I could afford to actually live in San Diego or at least own a little sail boat.

Hunter 31 (1983) Pompano Beach FL
Welcome to the "FREE BOAT" club. I am currently restoring the 1983 31' Hunter I got for free on Facebook. I hope you have as much fun as I am having in your restoration. Check the link below for progress on the Stargazer. A free boat sure makes spending money on restoration feel a little better.

Had a buddy that had that boat. It sleeps a lot more people than you would think possible.

Keep us update on progress and progress. It will be cool to see how it goes.

That is a cool looking little boat.

Is it a shoal keep or centerboard? If it is a centerboard really inspect the centerboard, the pin, and the lifting system. Peace of mind from doing this is worth the time.
