Dinghy?

We paid around $90 at WM around 4 years ago then hardly used it. It lived on my Tartan 27' in its box for a few years in case of an emergency that never happened. For the last 2 years I have used it as a dinghy to row out to my moored 19' day sailor. Ours says it can hold 4 adults but is much more comfortable with 2; 4 kids maybe. I would not want to have to use it in any kind of strong winds as it would be hard to go any direction but downwind but it is not a life raft or full fledged 'inflatable' but it easily 1/10th the cost or less even. Search the web for 'Sevylor'. Sorry to hear about the theft. Maybe it will turn up.

My beat up old dingy

I bought a hard dingy from a lady for $200. It had been sitting in her back yard for a while. With a small fiberglass patch job, a little of paint, and some new wooden seats it is a nice little dingy (8 foot). I tow it behind my Catalina 30 and it works well. I put a name on my dingy to detract from people stealing it (that and the Virginia Registration). My boat was named Spirit of Liberty when I bought it and I kept the name. When I got my dingy I decided to name it Justice (Liberty and Justice). I tend to lock my dingy when I use it to get into shore from my boat, but locks are for honest people. I do worry about it being stolen. There is no real answer to it (people will always take what is not theirs). At least, at home, it is guarded by my dog (she doesn't let anything she doesn't know into her area of the yard so I keep the dingy there). As far as a kayak, I think that I would feel better with a hard or RIB dingy. Kayak is just too unstable!

Thanks for all the input but....

I found the dink. I feel really silly but it turns out that I had left it at my mother's house. I knew I had stashed my rowing shell in her basement, but I didn't remember dragging the dink down there. Maybe I killed to many brain cells on New Years :) In any event, at least that's one thing I don't have to replace next year. Oh, and thanks a lot Jeff.

I knew I had stashed my rowing shell in her basement, but I didn't remember dragging the dink down there. kayak to sailboat

I usd to use a canoe for my tender on my first boat,a 17 foot oday.That was not too bad mostly because of the distance from the water to the rail on the boat . I now have a 26 ftr, oday too,and use a multitude of tenders,a small 2/3 person dink which i prefer to paddlle with my kayak paddle.I also use a solo 12 ft perception Acadia and a 2and 1/2 person perception 17 ft. Jocassee,the latter being the easiest of all to board the sailboat from. I can safely paddle long distances to the boat and carry lots of gear and then transfer said gear onboard w/out any drawbacks. The Acadia on the other hand is not so easy I do it when I am soloing or just checking on the boat or going out to use it as a private beach but carry very little gear.I think in all the years of doing itthis way I have only fell in twice,it is a balancing act so be careful if you go this route I moor the boat about 1 mile from the rack where I keep the kayaks so the kayak trip is a little exercise and then I follow it with a swwim before the trip back.I do keep the dink on a rack at the mooring area for the quick trip out to the boat. In bad water I will appropriate 1 of my neighbors unlocked kayaks to run out to the boat but never for long.
