Somebody stole my dinghy. I just realized it this morning. It was in my back yard, and now it's not. Has anyone tried using a kayak as a tender? How did it work out?

I have a friend that loves to kayak and she tells me
that boarding a kayak from a sailboat is more difficult than ballet dance. ;DHaving said that I still think that godawful paint patterns on a dink would reduce theft and make the boat recognizable from a mile away. Four people with paint pots, each of a different color patch painting their way around would create a pattern that would be as unique as a face.

What a terrible way to start the new year! Was it registered? Go out and drive around all the boat slips in the area...it was probably someone local, esp. kids drunk on New Year celebrations. I really hope you find it.Many people use kayaks (sit in, not sit on) as tenders; there was a piece about it in one of the mags recently. Do some research on the net, you might find it.Good luck, and this be the only bad thing about 2008!

Small boat sailors often use a kayak as a tender because it is easy to transport and stow. Here's some alternatives to consider.Go to: http://kobernus.com/hunter260/kayak/kayak.htmlAs mentioned, you have to be fairly agile to get in and out of one but we love the flexibility and convenience our kayaks provide.

We have 4 kayaks!!!! One little recreational for bassfishing in the river. Two seakayaks for bigger water and one intermediate for the wife. They are all hard to get into and out of... On a warm day wearing a swimsuit I wouldn't worry about getting from the boarding ladder to the kayak. But not now with cold water. A sit on top kayak might work but I've never used one. Once you are in a kayak IMHO they are much more seaworthy than a dinghy. At least my Walker Bay 8' dinghy. Especially dealing with high winds and large waves. My seakayak ishard to beat....but getting into it is another thing!!!!

You will stay in balance if you un-clip the life-lines, put the kayak noe out a ways, get in then dive it. Simple and fun.Else you can mount from an inflatable rafted a-beam if you have one, no problemo here either.

it would kind of like stepping into a floating 55 gallon drum! Probably some punk kid... needing some cash. Put out a reward... the kid that helped lug it off could use that extra $50.

Steve, Kayaks are fun, but limited. Even begginer kayaks can turtle, and no space to haul gear or folks.I personally like an infaltable, don't row worth a damn, but life is a set of compromises and sacrifices; have four kayaks, but don't use as a tender.

I agree with Ross. Make it different somehow. Mine was new, unregistered, unmarked and gone in two days. Painted reg numbers would be my recommendation at the least.Since I needed to get to my boat (moored) and the dingy was gone, I went to the local sporting goods store and bought a "4 man" sevylor for $45. It was either that or another $1K to replace the Avon. Good enough to paddle the 50 yards from shore. Thank god I still had the pump. I did make a floor board from some leftover okoume and varnish so I can stand in it while transfering aboard.I don't think anyone would bother to steal the pool toy (eye popping graphics), and if they do I'll just go get another.

I use a one of those cheap Canadian Tire inflatables when I need a Dinghy, I just have on of those little 12V air compressors, so I can store the entire mess in a seat when I dont need it.
