I would like to hear from anyone on various methods to secure a dinghy and motor at a dinghy dock or any other location where the dink is left unattended.

Bike Cable Locks

We use bicycle cable locks to secure the dingy. Most cables are about 6' long with a loop at each end -- we loop one through a dock cleat (the open base kind) and then secure the other end to the dinghy with the lock. Same for the outboard. Mike Turner S/Y Amity

Dinghy Locks

Matt, I keep my sailboat on a mooring and use a dinghy to get to it each time I go sailing. When I am not using Angels' Grace the dinghy is unattended at a town dock. I use a six foot piece chain and a combination lock. For the motor there are locks specically made to secure your outboard to the dinghy Good luck Charlie Gruetzner S/V Angels' Grace

Dink security

Matt; Sometimes you can't get right next to the dock because of crowding so you need a long painter. Same with your cable. Go to a rigging shop and have a twenty foot 1/4 inch cable made up. Loop one end through a strong point on the outboard, pass it through another strong point on the dink, lead it up to the dock and secure it with the lock, preferably a combination lock, so a lost key won't be a hassle. This may not keep a determined pro from stealing your dink, but it will keep the Saturday night drunk from using your dink to get back to his boat then setting your dink adrift. Happens. Good luck.

Long cable and locks

When tied up at our home port we use a lock and long cable (standing rigging from West Marine with loops on both ends)and a special outboard lock. When tied up at Block or Nanatuckett we end up using a long line tied off due to rafting, then we are glad we have insurance. RREgge S/V Allie Kat

Recycled Lifelines w/ Nicropress Ends

I use a long Plastic coated wire with a combination lock. Learned that from the charter folks in BVI. Barry
