Dinghy Davit Pulleys

I got a super good deal on used Ocean Marine davits for my 07 H-36 with out pulleys so which do you recommend is 4-1 good or should I get 6-1 for my 9'6 with aluminum floor dinghy and I have a 8 hp motor and do also have a motor lift.
Any other helpful tips for the install.

Nick, as you most likely know already, the difference is going to be the amount of line you have to have for the difference between the 4:1 and the 6:1. I suggest you check out either around your docks to see what others with boats your size have done, or check the Forespar, Novalift and Garhauer websites for what they provide with their davits in your "size range."

I have 6:1 on my Garhauer davits (standard issue for Garhauer) and they make the job almost effortless. I have a 9'3" with inflatable floor at 66# plus a 3.5 Nissan at 27#. I leave the outboard on the dinghy all the time so it is ready to go immediately.

I think I would go with the 6:1. Everything gets harder to do as you get older.

I have 4-1 on my davits. If you are going to keep the engine on your dingy, I would get 6-1 for the side with the engine, and 4-1 on the side without the engine. When I lift my air floor dingy with a 6HP Tohatsu, it is very easy to lift the bow, but I have to sit down and push my feet against the rails to lift up the stern with the engine.

One other thought, keep in mind your stern white navigation light when you mount the davits!

Thanks Semperavanti41 for the stern light reminder. I needed to re-mount my light up higher to make it visible. I put it on my wind generator pole.

I wish I had opted for 6:1 for the davit that lifts the engine. Our dingy is fairly light with a 4-stroke 4hp yamaha, but still takes a lot of effort to haul up the stern. Especially after some rain, gas can, etc.

Thanks guys and will opt for 6-1 and I am not getting any younger and my bad back doesn't need any heavy lifting any way.
The boat show in tampa is at the end of this month so maybe I can get a discount on a setup for my dinghy davits.

Nick, get BALL bearings, not bushing bearings. Garhauer has
"show specials" don't know about Harken. BTW we have 6:1 on the motor end, 4:1 on the bow(my Mary Ellen's end).

We leave the 9.8 Hp 2 stroke on the dingy. I took my motor lift off

I, too have Ocean Marine Davits .. 6:1 for stern; 4:1 for bow ( 10' AB RIB w/ 15hp, 2stroke Merc OB). I have kept dingy with its motor up in the davits for the entire 12 years that I've owned the boat.... including going offshore. They have done a great job.

Ocean Marine Davits has a booth at most of the boat shows... not sure if they will be at the Tampa Show, but, I'd call them to see. They would probably give you a boat show special price for the blocks and lines you need, and, if they are at the show, you could pick them up there, as well as get any questions answered about installation .

All good info to know and hope to get a good price at the tampa boat show and have the davits all installed and ready to go for the PGSC cruise north end of Oct,I will check to see who at the boat show in Tampa.
I never been to Tampa Boat show but I know Miami has all the venders.

Question

My achillies dinghy doesn't have any rings on the inside bow of the dinghy for hooking up for hooking up the hoisting pulley for the bow of dinghy and they show how to add heavy webbing under the air floor.
So I am thinking of doing the same thing with my aluminum flooring by adding heavy duty webbing hoist system I got with my dinghy,or drilling holes into the flooring and mounting some type of fastener to the flooring.
Anyone do anything like this.

Hoist points for an inflatable dinghy

My Achilles has an inflatable floor and it did not have rings on the inside of the bow for lifting. I added rings on both sides using the largest ring and pad available so that the load - even with some water- would be spread out. I used two eye-bolts in the transom. See pix below.

Something to consider with webbing under the floor. In the case of an inflatable floor, if it were to lose air pressure, I think it could pop out and let the dinghy drop. This may not happen with a solid floor, but I would take it into consideration.

Also Nick, pay attention to the instructions from Ocean Marine to be sure that the davit arm tips are sufficiently inside of the dinghy so that the dinghy can be secured in an unmoving position. You have a fairly long dinghy and depending upon the mounting locations on your boat it could be an issue.

Yes I see that they say to make sure the davits form a trapezoid,I have been reading the manual making sure I follow all of their instructions.
I need to replace 2 of the smaller plastic spacers for the railing clamps which are cracked so I have been planning my install,they were on a Hunter for a year and decided to add a full arch off the stern to replace the Ocean Davits.

This is an excellent point. I have the Hunter davits on my boat and I have a maze of lines and other devices to maintain the dinghy stationary in a seaway. I have a 10'-6" AB with a 15 HP Yamaha. The whole rig weighs about 250-270 lb. I actually have led the hoisting lines to the cabin top electric winch so the hoist is effortless. The lifting points are just slightly inward from the hard points on the dinghy as Rich says here. That does help a lot athwartship but for and aft stability is also a concern when it gets a bit bouncy.

I think the Ocean Options instructions are to have the distance between the lifting points about 18-24 inches less than the dinghy attachment points.
