I have a 1984 Cat. 30 and as on most boats, the dinette table in the normal position is inconvenient at best. Its almost impossible to get around to the back side, let alone get into the settee storage. My wife is a traditional female.....Potty seat down and table up , kinda gal. Problem is I always get it backwards. I like the table down all the time, for snacking, lap-top, and as a chart table when underway. I was thinking of making a table about 2/3 as long, and slightly narrower. this would solve the problem and keep all aboard ....well, happy. I am not sure about what to do about the leg supports when in the " bed" position, should we want to use it.am a fairly good woodworker. I can build almost anything so building is not the problem, I can seem to get beyond the design stage. ANY SUGGESTIONS?????

Check out my boat

Hey Tony, Here's a solution that came with my boat. There's a smaller table connected to the bottom of regular table via a hinge. Check out the link below. It's a great design that gives you the choice of using the full size table, or a smaller one. The picture isn't great...email me if you need more clarification @ allens@mathworks.com

Here's a couple of clever ideas

Wrestling that table into position is my least favorite part of the my boat. Though I guess its part of the reason for the amazing amount of living space in the C30. I'm considering doing something myself and found two interesting ideas: This clever guy came up with a great scheme to hinge the table in the middle, shortening it and making it very easy to put into the bed position. http://localsonly.wilmington.net/~jt/catalina.html This is a pic of a c30 with a U-shaped dinette. I think may have been a factory option (?) on some boats. http://www.rubberducky.net/ducky1/Catalina/photos/Large/dinette.jpg

Dinette Table

The Tech Manual has a couple of ideas for modifying the table so it works like the home table with a leaf. I haven't done the modification myself just yet, but the writer claims the table can still be used as the bed support with no loss of support. E-mail me at JohnGnMB@aol.com if you want more infor.

Table problem

I've been thinking about this same problem for my C30 ... I thought I was just too fat to get around the back of the table. Anyway, on a C32 or C34 that I saw years ago, the guy had rigged up an arrangement by which the table stayed parallel to the cabin sole, and either slid down into the bed position or stayed up in the table position. The way he'd rigged it, the mechanism for the table was an integral part of a magazine rack or bookcase that occupies the place where the table now folds up. I'm sure I'm not explaining this well, it's almost impossible to describe it. Anyway, I'm with you on this, brother. If you can think of a solution, I'd love to know. Are you a member of the C-30 list serve? If not, you should be. Also, there are various illustrations at ftp://ftp.sailnet.com/c30/ on a lot of different issues.

A second table

I have seen some C-30's with a round table rather than a the rectangle. Our friend put the rectangular table under the cushions of the aft berth and used the round table. This makes it so you can change it if you want make it into a berth and sleep on it.
