Remove the tank to get it thoroughly cleaned; as an alternative for a tank in boat cleaning I would recommend filling up with fresh diesel fuel and polishing the fuel until what recycles out is sparklingly clear. Trying to flush the fuel tank while in the boat is a cumbersome effort

drained my tank and disposed of the old fuel. Then I pulled my tank out and took it to a self-serve car wash that allows engine cleaning and used the pressure washer and soap to power clean the inside. My tank has an aftermarket inspection port that allows me to get my arm inside and I used a new toilet bruss that was the right length to allow me to get to all corners. After it was clean, I poured in some acetone to use as a drying agent which I sloshed around and poured out. Then I left it to air dry in the sun for a day.

I found fuel tank inspection ports here: Cleanout Access Ports for about $40 for a 4" opening, 6" outside round aluminum port (with solvent-compatible gasket). A whole lot cheaper than SeaBuilt, hopefully will work well on my 34-38(?) gal Cat 42 tank, which had more rust-like stuff in the bottom.
