I recently acquired what has been termed a “27’ Catalina Tall” The boat is in fair to good condition and I am looking forward to sailing to the Channel Islands. The inboard engine doesn’t work so I had the local diesel mechanic look it over. He told me there was no or little compression; the exhaust valve was bad. His diagnosis came from air being sucked into the exhaust port. Ok I can deal with that, but there is no room in the engine compartment to work on the engine, let a lone remove it if I ever needed to. One suggestion has been to cut a hole in the deck and replace it with a waterproof hatch. I believe the engine is a one-lung BMW diesel and I would like to keep it working. scottie the sailor, goodmorning brother {plesae mind my spelling}I have had a 78 27 catalina{falcon} for a few years now and it has the petter single cylinder diesel motor in it. my friend ED sold me this vessel, but while ED owned it he rebuilt the motor, and was confronted with some of the same problems as you.I can say to you what Ed did was to enlargen both side engine access openings so that getting to both sides of the motor was alot easier, you can cut these openings as large as you need to . also once they are done it makes everything much easier to check other thing as well . also no one will ever know. what I'm trying to say is cutting a hole in the deck doesn't seem to me to make this repair much easier, then you will have to make a waterproof floor panel that you and everyone eles will be stepping on. I dont think i would do that to my boat.Ed and I made two slipp in side panel once the rebuilt motor was finnised.Finally I feel that for resale keeping your catalina all origanle is just what most buyers will be looking for not to mention the inboard diesel is very desirable and very reliable. if there is anything else I you might want to ask me feel free to ask . heres my e address kenbottomley@juno.com ok brother go sailing and GOOD LUCK JAKE L.

One of the best sources of information about specific boats for Catalinas (in addition to this website) are the individual models' associations. Most of them are accessable by www.cXY.org (but the new C350 group is .net). So try www.c27.org. Most association websites usually have FAQs. and places to ask questions. You can also try the lists at sailnet.com for your boat size. Given the number of C27s that have been built, and the great fraternity of owners, I am sure that your question has been asked and answered so that you don't have to reinvent the wheel.
