I am actively interested in buying an older Catalina 25,27,or 28 foot boat. I HAVE to have a swing keel. Am I out of luck, or did Catalina ever build a swing keel in their older 25,27, or 28 foot boats. Thx for the help!

Thx for info on Swing Keel CATALINAS. Am located in NC. Need a swing keel for trailering to the coast. I live 5 hours from the coast. Would u consider taking the 25 off shore occasionally? )Max 3 miles while outside the Inter Coastal Waterway South Bound from Wilmington to Florida. Seems all the boats in the Catalina class are glued and riveted together. Whether Hunter, C&C, etc...same/same. Just the nature of the breed for the price range I guess. How much are u wanting and where are you located? Any pics? Thx, Richard

Built by Catalina, to go to Catalina;). That is a bit of humor, but since Catalina is 20nm or so out from LA harbor, you get my point. More important than 'how far out' is how far from a safe harbor you are and your comfort level regarding the weather forecasts. In your area, you need to watch for thunderstorms and winds whose direction is against the Gulf Stream, in addition to the more obvious big storms.

You don't need offshore construction for coastal sailing, which 3 miles out generally is unless you have a long rough coast with no harbors.

If I had time to go to California, I would happily take my 22 to Catalina:D. I don't know your waters north of Miami, but C25s go more than three miles out 'all the time':).

Re: Go Out

Thx very much for the advice! Would u take a Catalina 25 across the Gulf Stream to the Bahamas in good weather? I have always heard to never take a "glued together" boat very far off shore. Thx! RJ

Thx@ Do the swing keels get jammed with crude, barnacles, etc. if left in salt water or would a wing keel boat be less maintenance? RJ

1. Beyond my experience. My few experiences with the Gulf Stream have been in larger boats (40') or smaller (Hobies). I was dismasted on a resort owned Hobie with the wind against the stream. Even on a 40'er the boat can bounce around a lot. But how small to go across is not something I am comfortable answering.

2. The swing is more maintenance. The cable, winch, lockdown bolt and the bearings all need to be looked after. More moving parts, more problems. Make sure the system is well protected by zincs.

Best o' Luck

What utter nonsense. "Glued together?" Where'd you get that?

Stephanie, The Boat Babe and her guy sailed their B25 to the Bahamas and back. No one goes across the Gulf Stream with a north wind. The C25 Association website is a valuable resource (http://www.catalina-capri-25s.org/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=3) and there are guys there who have sailed there.

Stu, according to the pics and script providedby the factory the Catalina hulls are joined to the upper deck with rivets and glue...as are most boats in this price range. I don't know this for a fact, but I believe it to be true as this is the way the factory presents the boat. Thx!

biggd, the hull to keel connections are bolted not riveted beneath the rub rail on the three Catalinas I've owned.

Glue? 5200 is hardly "glue" - it's pretty tenacious stuff, which is why I keep saying the only place it has on a boat IS the hull to deck joint.

Thx for the clarification! I do know that the hull to keel is through bolted but I was referring to the hull to upper deck being riveted and glued together as per the factory. I am not knocking the boats at all. They are some the most beautiful boats ever. I only wish that I could afford one@

So we've got this Catalina 25 and I keep hearing about "lock down" BOLTS. What's the use of a swinger if it's locked in the down position?

I have some concern that "if" we get a bit too far over and the keel breaks free of its watery confines and we lay it down, that the keel will begin to fold up. We'd then lose our ballast advantage and things could get a bit sticky.

Wonder if any of those Catalina 25 swing keel folks who read your post have any first hand knowledge of laying one over. All those posts I've seen elsewhere only refer to something other than a Catalina 25. I'm beginning to think they don't go over.:D
