I have x4 oillamps, 3 of them Den Haan. Many years ago one of them started leaking as well. I did this:
- sloshed tank/container several times with acetone, and poured it out.
- let it dry overnight
- put some grease on the thread to ensure no epoxy would stick to that
- made some thin epoxy, approx. 50 ml, slowly rotated the container over an hour
- waited for 3 days to fully cure and refill with kero
- never had it leak again

Yes, all of my lamps are somewhat corroded, I am polishing them right now, what still unsre what varnish/epoxy to use to protect the shine..... suggestions welcome.

I have and use two brass oil lamps onboard. I also have LED light fixtures for task lighting. I leave one oil lamp burning as a night light. Nice soft orange glow goes well with alcohol and music. I have never found a varnish or lacquer that will stand up to lamp oil so I just rub the lamp with lamp oil to stop surface oxidation. Seems to work and is probably what was done back in the day.

My wife and I were just discussing how much we have enjoyed our lamps when anchored or in the slip, etc.....we use liquid paraffin.(sp?)....as a lamp fuel and the only soot is on the various globes, etc....we are very careful when using them as they could be a fire hazard if care is not taken.....the warm glow (and maybe even a little heat) can
be wonderful on a cool evening..then some good music....and all well be well . Pat

I have 2 oil lamps....in a new boat. No black soot...I dont get light headed, and the CO detector hasnt gone off in a closed up boat. They are W/Plath chrome, 10 years old and look new.

You also may experience glass chimney cracking from time to time. I was buying glass chimneys from WM quite regularly only to have them crack almost immediately when lighting the lamp. WM stopped selling them and I purchased a couple from eBay that were no name made in China. The first one has been in use for years without a problem and I have the spare. Glass must be designed for the purpose and these oil lamps are a nearly lost art.

Weems and plath annapolis is a dealer for den haan. we have 2 w and p oil lamps and 2 den haans. we love them. we burn nothing but the W and P pure lamp oil. no lamp has ever smoked or blackened any of our interiors for the past 30 years... nothing like a good rainstorm at anchor, lamps lit, anchor light on, harmonica or lap steel playing... and wine.

Just wondering how you power that TV. At the dock, w/shore power, or inverter, or maybe it's a DC unit?

I have one of those caboose lamps that I use when at anchor. Great for heat and light. Wish I had a convinent place to hang one on the wall.

It is a standard 120VAC unit that operates on whatever source is supplied; inverter, shore power, Genset, etc. I know that newer units consume less power, but not an issue here. Could not go wrong for $12.

You can attach a gimbal bracket to it for wall mounting, which is what I did. Most standard brass lamp gimbal brackets will fit.

Benny, lighten up. I'm using an oil lamp in my boat, O.K.? Do you have to argue about everything? If you want to advocate LEDs over oil lamps, start your own thread.

I start a thread asking folks about this particular oil lamp, and it becomes a debate on whether we should use oil lamps, or abandon them for LEDs. Really.
Agreed seems like a lot of threads are going in that direction. I for one like old school stuff. Then again I am a Old Fart. However I did change out all my cabin and nav lights and bulbs to LED.
