I need instructions on interfacing either of these for a vista laptop that only has usb no serial ports. the legend has a serial cable with a usb adaptor but isn't recognised by seaclear. thanks in advance. sid
My eTrex with serial cable through a USB adapter works well on this laptop. I have three different packages and all of them "see" the GPS. I do not have Seaclear however. Does your PC recognize the GPS? You can check from "My Computer" or from "Control Panel". If you see the GPS there then I would use "Help" on Seaclear to see if there is a setting. Fugawi, Garmin, and Offshore Lite find the GPS with no settings and no help from me. Of course you first have to have satellite connectivity.
P.S. Also saw this question with answers over on Sailnet.
You can download a serial port emulator from the Delorme web site. Works great with Maptech Offshore Navigator and has a monitor function to give you location, speed, and course if you can't get your navigation software running.
You will need a USB to Serial adapter to use the ETrex with Vista. The driver for the USB to serial adapter should allow it to show up as a COM port. You also have to set the serial port interface on the ETrex to NMEA 0183, 4800, 8, N 1. or the computer software won't recognize it.
ok the emulator is installed but it only allows ports 2-99, seaclear looks for com 1 how do i change the settings in seaclear to look on com 2. thanks for your help.
