Blah.....Just install a gun deck on your boat and turn it into a man of war. A few broadsides and they will run for cover.

Please don't tell us to quit sailing; that's not going to happen. I'm not interested in trying to defend myself with a converted flare gun or bang stick; we are talking about 2 or more armed attackers, in a boat, bobbing up and down. Molotov cocktails are pretty impractical, as well.

You accept the risk of sailing in questionable waters when you enter them, so either don't go there or prepare to defend yourself if needed. YOUR CHOICE ! The paramiters you sugggest present an impossible situation. You appear to be unrwilling to defending yourself with realistic options so your best defense is avoid the problem areas. The intruders have nothing to lose and you have everthing to lose. The ONLY thing these people will understand is if you can HURT them.

Don't be the guy who brings a knife to a gun fight ! !

Molotov cocktails if they get that close followed by flares.

Perhaps rig something that you can put in the water and tow that will not be seen immediately but can fowl their props, ALso the flame thrower is good idea because it can be made to look like anything and remotely fired. The component parts when separated are all legal products. you would have to make sure the bad guys were close enough to engulf their whole boat on the first shot. people burning up don't shoot to well. You would have to give the impression that you were complying and allow them to come along side before you set it off. Sink the boat and make sure the bodies go down with it. If they are ever found it would just look like they had a fuel explosion.

I have read several threads along these lines over the last few years. None of them have come up with a legal way to overcome a determined enemy with and automatic weapon. About the only way to do it is to shoot first with a bigger gun before they get within their weapons range, and you can't positively identify them at that kind of range (unless they are flying the skull and crossbones:D) and there is probably nowhere you can legally go with that type weapon:cry:. Best to avoid the area, 2nd best to sail with a group. -Paul

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, SC (WTOC) - The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office is looking for a gunman in connection with an assault that occurred at a Hilton Head marina early Tuesday morning.
Just before 1:30 a.m., deputies responded to Shelter Cove Marina on a report of shots fired and a woman screaming for help. A 26-year-old woman said told deputies that her husband had been shot.
The man had a head injured, but had not been shot, according to the sheriff's office. He was lying on the ground in the pavilion area. They told deputies that they were sitting on the boat, drinking and listening to music when an armed man came aboard.
The suspect put a gun to the man's head. The couple told deputies that they heard the gun go off. It's believed that the gun may have gone off when the man was being pistol-whipped, according to the sheriff's office. The suspect ran toward the parking lot.
The victim was taken to Hilton Head Medical Center for treatment and has since been released, according to the sheriff's office.
The motive for the attack is not yet known. The suspect is described as a black male between 21 and 25 years old who was wearing a black shirt and black hat, according to the sheriff's office.

and y'all say mexico is too dangerous to visit--i think usa is getting far too dangerous to remain ---- no one has done anything like this in the marinas here--good luck folks-i hope no one else gets hurt or harrassed--but times are a changin--not for the better.....
as financial straits are worse, there will be more of this-- stay safe.

I would be interested in knowing where it is illegal to carry a shotgun and where it is illegal to defend yourself. Those are the areas I would avoid.

Do not underestimate a 12 gauge. A 12 gauge chambered for 3 1/2" shells (magnum) is an incredibly powerful weapon, and can fire a wide range of rounds, both legal and illegal as well as homemade. With a magnum you can fire heavy slugs, some up to 2 ounces, penetration slugs are able to go through an engine block, Flechette rounds, which is a shell packed with 20 or so hardened steel darts which have a wide pattern so to cover a wide area. There are also incendiary rounds for starting brush fires as well as flare rounds which can be shot to over 500 feet. Fired at someone or their boat at point blank range any of these would make them wish they had bothered someone else.

Many defense shotguns have higher capacity magazines capable of holding upward of 7 rounds. You could have the gun preloaded with a variety of the above shells and if you practiced, would know which round was up next and exactly where to fire it. Flechettes and buck shot to clear their deck. Slugs to hole their hull. Penetrators to hole their engine and hull. Incendiaries to finish the job.

if you can't or don't want a gun, and are confronted with someone with a gun, you have poor odds.

but to answer your question. compound bow and arrows with broad heads.

but you would be better off going below, and trying to attack once they boarded.

I've read of a sailor that had a plywood form of an M16, painted black. Actually, a slightly larger than life silhouette.

Of course, you'll have to see them coming.

a fellow sailor who did a lot of research on the subject tells me that in a lot of place's having a weapon on board is a major no no and could get you prison time in a place you'd wish you were shot instead :bang:

As an competition shooter, my vote would be for a medium caliber long range rifle, particularly one that can be broken down, like the EDM Windrunner. If you can't hit the assailants, at least you can put a few holes in their boat and hope it sinks before they reach you. I would also look at a Glock 17 and if your state allows them, a few 30 round mags, or even an AR15 pistol if they manage to get close.
But that's me, as I know I'm pretty proficient at hitting targets in just about all situations. You better believe that if they see you with a gun, they will start shooting.
However my #1 vote would be to avoid areas like that all together. If you must pass through a place like that, get on the radio first and see if there are any friendlies with major fire power in the area (I.e., US Navy)

Think long and hard before arming yourself. As stated its serious jail time in most countries. If your going to try to bluff it pick up a M72 LAW from a surplus shop.
Your going to need something with a 500 yard standoff range to keep from getting ventilated with AK rounds. Something like a 30-06 that can reach out and touch someone could do that. Marksmanship from a rolling boat is a whole different story.
Travel in packs. Communicate with each other. Don't carry cash or a lot of jewelry. Let the local CG know your float plan. I wish you luck.

Utah student held in Canada after gun found at border crossing August 20, 2012

Kraig Jacobson was jailed for 18 days and can't leave Canada until Jan24, 2013 court date.

So be careful what you bring to another country, even just across the lake. Canada is consider "friendly" compare to many other places.

You ever wonder why tankers don't bring RPG and AA guns.

A long gun with a scope. A 30-06 or 7MM something that can reach out and touch someone. A shotgun will do you no good past up close and personal. But you will need the nerve to use it. If you see a weapon on a small boat moving fast in your direction it's show time. And if you kill one then you better be prepared to kill them all and put enough holes in the boat to make it sink or they and thier friends will find you and it will not be a good thing. Dead people tell no tales. But your best bet would be to avoid the area.
