I am redoeing my decks this winter {under cover} and would like to know the best way to do them , everything outside of the cockpit is original but will be done
The cockpit has been brushed with some sort of paint that is dull in finish and anything you touch it with leaves a mark {primer?} Any help would be gratefull:confused:

I've had good results with Interlux Toplac or Brightside Finnishes. Toplac is a little better (IMO) but is more expensive and getting hard to find (at least in these parts).
As always, surface prep is KEY!!!!

Are you asking about the entire deck, both the white gelcoat and the non-skid? For the white I also used Interlux Toplac. Now that I have experience with two-part I would use Perfection after the Interlux Epoxy Primer. There isn't that much white on my boat, mainly the cabin sides, so keeping a wet edge would not be that difficult.

For the non-skid I used Interlux Interdeck the second time around. I mixed my own the first time and did not like the results. Some, like Kiwi, are too agressive for me.

what color did you use there.. i like it. Right now my nonskid is all grey like yours apparently was.

Two-part poly has lasted on our decks for about 8 years. This summer I touched up sections with Interdeck nonskid, which seems to work well enough...time will tell. We were disappointed that there was no matching color for NON-nonskid from Interlux. We used Brightsides for the smooth sections in the cockpit area, and are not pleased. It seems to scuff easily and not hold up well, less than 2 months after application. The two-part obviously holds up much better, but has to be mixed and applied very carefully while using a carbon filter mask against the fumes: not easy.

My non-skid Interdeck is the "Sand beige" Billy. When I did the smooth I mixed 2/3 white and 1/3 off white of the Toplac. I think the reason we see no Toplac is because they improved Brightside to the point there was no longer a difference. Still I would go with the 2-part Perfection. The "smooth" is easy because the only masking is the portliights. Mine were out at the time so I free handed the whole thing. Only had to be careful at the toerail. All the other edges are covered with the non-skid. For that lots of taping.

When I did the white I painted a two inch stripe down the middle of the boat, from the anchor locker to the spray hood. That way I only had to do half the boat at a time. Much easier to keep a wet edge. Oh, and also did an angled stripe near the shrouds. This gave me a place to stop and to walk so I could get off the boat.

For the die hards out there Gibco makes the original nonskid pattern molds for just about every boat made. I bought the male version and made female molds from a half sheet using Polytek urethane rubber. I then recast the original pattern in gelcoat on my Oday 27. It's some real work and quite tricky but the results are incredible. Minicraft of Florida has the best price for the Gibco Flex Mold in more than the standard 1' X 1' available from most marine outlets. www.gibcoflexmold.com
