I need to replace the sheaves on my deck organizers on our 1986 Catalina 30. I read the helpful info in the archives regarding parts from Garhauer but my problem is: Removing the Screws. Since the screws to not come into the cabin and are not backed with washers and nuts, I assume they are just screwed into the deck using some sort of epoxy, because I can't seem to apply enough pressure to remove the screws without either damaging the phillips head or breaking off the screw. Thanks for any help.

Organizer Backing Plates

The bolts on my 1986 C34 screw into a tapped backing plate that is built by Catalina right into the deck under the pad. After I replaced my sheaves last week, I noticed that a neighbor's C34, probably an 87 or 88, has screws, rather than bolts. My organizers are stacked (a 2 above a 3 on each side) and are right on top of the fiberglass pad on the deck. My neighbor has not stacked his, and one is on the pad and the other is on the deck. Having not been inside his boat, I do not know if the "non-pad" screws are screwed through and backed. I doubt if there is another built in backing plate in any other place other than under the pad. Best suggestion I can offer is to use an impact screwdriver to get the screws out, and perhaps use some screwdriver helper (available in the West Marine catalog or probably a hardware store) to avoid killing the screw heads. A little (or a lot) of liquid wrench would also be an idea. You may also want to talk to Garhauer about seeing if they can get you the bolts, to replace the screws, to avoid this problem in the future. The bolt heads take a 7/16 inch rachet drive and are easier to work with than screws, as you've found out. It did take some doing to get them started on their way out. Good luck, Stu

Replaced mine last year

I have a '86 C30. I did mine last year. The replacement you order from Garhauer will have new screws. I used an impact driver and visegrips. Don't worry about the screws. If I remember the screws that I recieved with the organizer were a little on the long side, but I had purchaced some replacments before I recieved the shipment. Good luck.
