I have never needed or desired to "document" a vessel. I understand that for the pain of dealing with the US Federal Government and paying a fee to renew every five years, it makes some international vessel sales and financing a little easier. You do not avoid paying whatever state fees are due for keeping your boat in the state, and most states document this with that little tax sticker annually. You do not post numbers on the boat, but must register her name and give a hailing port, put that on the outside, and permanently stencil the federal registration number on the inside of the vessel. My view is that I would do that if someone held a gun on me, otherwise it's too much of a pain.
I gotta mention Lettering.com to anyone contemplating having vinyl letters created. They used be DIYlettering, but are now Lettering.com. I've used them on multiple occasions and have always receive stellar service. I always get the premium "cast" vinyl that they offer. Their user interface for designing your letters is intuitive and fun with more fonts available than I've seen on any other site. Great prices.
I sold my Catalina 28 last summer and replaced it with a Catalina 315 named Rhapsody. That's a nice enough name, but my previous boats have been named Straycat, and I'm sticking with that. The vinyl lettering arrived yesterday
My concern is that the guy that bought my Catalina 28 is going to be too lazy to rename it. That'll mean two sailboats named Straycat in the same port on Lake Michigan. I could always peel off his decals under cover of darkness, but I'd be the obvious suspect. Just have to wait and see.

I used island boat lettering, they did a great job. I have also used one of those DIY letter sites for a quicky, just to get the boat coast guard compliant. I like the results from Island Boat better. If you tell them what you are looking for they may come up with better ideas than a DIY might.

You know, I defaulted to a blue font for Ocean Jasper, but I think I'll upload the picture of my own Ocean Jasper stone and see what they can do. I'm not sure if it would look good with that image as the fill for the font, but they might be able to incorporate some artwork with it so that it communicates the feel of that stone.
