I know that many of you have used these with much success to remove vinyl stripes and/or lettering. I'm having some minor gelcoat work done this spring as a result of some damage caused by the lift at haulout last fall, and one of the upsides is that the glass guy is going to buff out the entire hull to make sure things match up color wise. The boat needs new stripes, and I'm changing the name as well (just got the boat last year and finally decided on a name), so I figured that I'd get all of the old off before the boat is buffed. After that preamble, my question is this - How long should I plan for to remove the stripes on a 35 foot boat? I've heard the "big eraser" works quite well, and is relatively quick. Also, what kind of wear on the eraser? In other words, for this size boat, how many erasers should I plan to go through? Thanks - T J

One or two units.

TJ: The more worn out the vinyl is the faster it goes. The stripes on the cabin on our H'31 took about 30-40 min. for both sides. The ones on the hull that are much more protected from the sun took about 3 hrs for a single side. There is an arbor that you need to purchase with the Eraser. This allows you to screw it into the device that will turn it. On my hull stripes, the eraser fell off and into the drink just before I finished the port side. I would get at least two units. If you never need the second one, you can take it back. You may also want to consider getting some of that 3M vinyl remover or some Island Girl (Pink) and spray on the stripes to soften them up. I have never used either on the stripes, but have heard that it helps. Be sure that you wear some protective eye wear. Sometimes a long sleeve shirt is not a bad idea either.

Thanks Steve

I thought that you were one of those who had used the eraser before. I'll plan on getting two, and give myself a day to do it. Fortunately, I'm planning on doing this on the hard, so I won't have to worry about dropping it into the drink. T J

FYI

TJ: If you shop around for these Erasers, you can find them for about half price. I only got one, so it was not worth paying postage. I paid about $14.00 for the unit and $3 or so for the Arbor.

Twenty bucks at. .

the local auto paint store for the "eraser". That included the arbor for chucking into my 1/2" variable speed drill. My 37-footer had three 1/4" stripes per side. They all six came off with one eraser. Those stripes were amazing, twenty-five years and barely faded. But gelcoat work necessitated their removal. New ones are on order from 3M(Related Link). I plan to install the 3 1/8" type.

Ed, How long?

Ed, How long did it take you to remove the 3 stripes, both side? That's what I'm looking at doing. Power that far out in the yard may be a problem for me, but my brother has offered his generator. T J
