When I turn on our electric panel lights to illuminate the guages, the dc ammeter goes to the maximum current draw reading. Any ideas?

check the wiring circuits? The amp meter must be

connected in series with the supply line and there should be a shunt in parallel with the meter to give it the range you need. Try using a flashlight to look at the Amp meter and turn on on circuit at a time. Or just do it in the daylight.

How long does it stay there also

are you sure you are reading current and not voltage? Most boats have a DC voltage meter and not a DC Current meter.

That ammeter would be a 0-25, mabe 1-50A with an INTERNAL shunt

because it's DC load (for a "regular" sized sailboat). So either the wiring is snafu or the meter's toast.

Bad meter, bad load, bad wiring, bad karma..

No boat info.
No meter info.
No load info.
No history info.

Hmm, are you just looking for "any ideas" ??
