Hello,
I just got finished building some davits for the stern of my 1979 Hunter 27. They are measured to fit along the aluminum rub rail and hang backwards over the water to support a small raft. The weight of the raft is about 60 pounds, and the davits weigh about 20 pounds each, meaning I will be placing 50 pounds on the rub rail on both sides of the boat . My question, before I attach everything permanently is; can the rub rail support 50 pounds okay?
I have seen numerous davit instilations where the davits were welded, or bolted, directly to the rub rails but I'm not sure if they had to reinforce anything. Are the rub rails strong enough to accept the weight of the davits or do I need to build an additional sub-frame to better support everything? What is the maximum amount of weight that the rub rail can support (I plan on adding solar panels to the davits)? Any information/thoughts/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks for all your help
