My datamarine depth finder registers 18.8 all the time.I know the lake depth must fluctuate what is the problem? Lake pontchatrain

I had the same problem with the Datamarine depth sounder on my P-31 last season. The problem was the LCD display, which needed to be replaced. You should contact DMI Marine at http://www.dmimarine.com/. They provide parts and service to the old Datamarine instruments. You will need to send them the control unit of the sounder and they will fix it for a very reasonable fee. This year my sounder is working good as new. They are a good resource for all your Datamarine instruments.

My depth display varies but is real dim and hard to see on my Pearson 39. Also does not light up. Sounds like it needs to be replaced to. So for $200 I can get a new display?

Could be the same fix, but to be sure I would give DMI a call. They are very helpful and should be able to give you a good idea of what the fix and cost will be.
