To state the obvious, in that sea state and wind speed, trying to shift down to a smaller head sail would have been a non-starter.

I have had to read Ricks post a half dozen times. THERE is the experience that I am bowing to. My hat is off to you Sir.

Gettinthere cruising is sooo different than day sailing as you know because of all the stuff we have lashed to the deck. Not only do we have a few stays, but there's extra anchors, lines, fenders, jerry cans, and solar panels all neat and tidy. Throw in a couple of bikes, lawn chairs, and a kayak and its no wonder why changing a sail aint that easy. We've been using the 110 Yankee instead of the 135 Gennie because I almost went overboard adjusting the sheets in a strong wind. Never happened on the old Catalina. We always start the day with a reefed main and decide on the headsail as we go. Then the main can be flaked out if the wind is light. Its all about making the 50-60 miles.
