My cat 25 interior cushions smell very badly. Maybe mold/mildew, not just the fabric, but the foam as well.1. can they be cleaned?? 2. If I clean them do you think that the foam fall apart??
I'll take a stab at this... There are a few things you can try--I've done each of these at various times on my cushions: 1) Put them in the sun. Several hours of sunlight on a dry day help freshen them. Mold and mildew hate sunlight, so it's good for that, too. 2) Lysol: spraying some Lysol on them helps freshen them, and Lysol will kill most mold/mildew. 3) Febreeze: this absorbs odor, and can help. 4) You can wash the cushion covers. I haven't done this, but others have. Getting them back on the foam can be a real project. 5) Ventilate the boat: extra fresh air down below helps keep things smelling fresh, and prevents that moldy/musty smell. Hope this helps...maybe others can offer some suggestions, too.Randy
I would definitely remove the covers and wash them. Plenty of fresh air and sunshine with a little Febreze should resolve the smelly foam problem. As a last resort, you can wash the foam (this is the fun part)by laying the cushions out in the driveway or patio and spraying them with water. Sprinkle with laundry detergent and with bare feet, stomp away! Picture wine making the old fashioned way. Rinse thoroughly until the water runs clear and leave in the sun to dry completely before putting covers back on. If nothing else, you (and the kids, if any) will have a ball!
For about $107, the local Chem Dry people cleaned them...watch out, I am told on taking the covers off, as they might shrink, or it is a "bear" to get them back on. They smell like new, look good. They should advise you on the status of the foam, wheter it is firm, rotting, etc.
