Crevice corrosion

Keels are not the only thing affected by crevice corrosion. I replaced all the clutches on my cabin top this weekend and here is one that I found with not much bolt left. This was the clutch for my main halyard. The core was rotton so I removed all the wet wood and potted the holes. The new clutches(Lewman D2) are very nice and the admiral loves using them.

is never seize a good product that would work to prevent corrosion like that..???...it works well in other application...automotive ,snowmobiles etc..

Never seize, that's a really good point m8magic, that's gearhead thinking. I used that product on past fishing boats & jeeps.

Bingo.

That was a clutch added by the dealer over 20 years ago.

And from the looks of it sealed with Silicone.. Glad that didn't fail during a race!!

BTW, the bolt was galvonically welded to the aluminum clutch. Lifting the clutch off the deck was easy so the only bond was mechanical and failing.

thats the beauty of never sieze...eliminate galling or welding on applications..yet still allows good mechanical tolerances for fit..

Except that the bolt head was exposed and subject to UV, salt water, dirt. How would Never Seize hold up to those elements?

The new clutch bolts are hidden inside the clutches but still subject to water and dirt. Butyl tape was used around the bolt and chamferred holes to insure a lasting seal and ease of maintenance.
