creaking cracking noise?

Port side hull, between midships and the bow. Was washing her and put a mild amount of pressure on the hull, above the waterline and heard a crack. Looked closer at the paint on that side and there are uneven spots and paint is very heavily crazed. Thoughts? Also, paint is clearly not 'quality, marine paint. I bought the boat for 2500$ with a trailer so I don't expect anything remotely near perfection. Is it safe ya think?

kinda sounds like maybe someone did a cheap repair and repainted it? Can you see the inside at that point? What does it look like? I would only be worried if there was some half a@% repair done.

Obviously, you will not be sure and confident in her until you see for yourself what the hull looks like from the inside in that area. I would try to pin point the suspected area. See if you can detect any visible give there when applying pressure. Try standing on my head use mirrors or whatever to see behind there from under the settees or V berth with a good light. If that still leaves doubt then accept the fact that it may be dangerous to ignore and decide where and how much must be cut open in the liner to check it out. Ask for cutting advice here. Plan the cutting to minimize the difficulty in closing it back up. Take some pics report what you find on here and let the forum guys help guide you from that point. Slow and steady, be assured it can be dealt with.

Thanks guys. I've been reticent to post more because I have an idea what it'll mean. How large of a repair is just too much for a boat? 1 square foot? 10? Or is it just up to me and what I want to put into her?

I'd say the limit is what you are willing to put of yourself time, effort and $. Me, I came to the conclusion the only way I could have another sail boat was find one I could get into cheaply and invest sweat equity. I needed a boat I could get some use out of as I invested in time / material to upgrade those areas that needed it. I also have the space on my little farm to work on her. I just finished the keel over the past winter and will put her back in the lake for the summer months.
Only you can decided, if you explain more about what you think the boat needs then maybe the guys on this forum can help you determine what will be required to fix it. That will give you a better idea of which way to go. Keep & fix, sell as is & try to recoup, or get a lawyer and sue the seller for fraud are the only options I can think of without knowing more about the problem.

For the numbers. 1 and 2 is where you hear the crack when pushed. Deflection is only about 1/16 of an inch. 2 deflection is a bit more and almost feels soft.

4 is another place where crack noise can be heard, same deflection. 1 has deflection of about 1/4 inch but no cracking noise. At 2 it almost feels soft? Is that a thing even?

The questionable spot appears to be just below the chainplate(s). Check the integrity of the chainplates and the deck surrounding them first. Could be water got in and migrated down the hull. Good luck.

What does it look like inside?? I am wondering if maybe there was damage and poorly repaired? Almost looks like newly painted

Stu Jackson has the best thought on this, I didn't think of that. it is highly likely so unless you can see something else from inside thru the v berth os settee hatches.

It was a bad paint job that I polished and waxed. I ain't good at much stuff but my finish work can make a man cry it's so good.

I'll take pics of the interior. I wanted to sail the summer with the family as I deploy in august for 4 months. If the boat is in repair mode for the summer then I am working on boat and not spending time with them. I am tempted....to put her in the water for the next 2 months, come what may to the boat, just so I can spend the time with the family enjoying the water before I deploy. Thoughts anyone?

Whatever you do, do it with your family. Whether it's on a boat, in your car, in your backyard or in your home. Time with family is what matters.

I will check mine when I get home but it is probably nothing. the hull has numerous flex points on the sides like that (anyone who has sanded or buffed their boat knows this). if you were REALLY concerned, you could either a) cut an inspection area in the liner or b) sand down the paint and see if there is a repair underneath then repaint if all is well. the second option could easily be done in a weekend

Hawk has a good suggestion.
I bought an old boat and unlike most just visually inspected and then launched it. Wife and I enjoyed it all last summer. This winter I worked on it. I had the same attitude. I want to sail a boat not work on one.
Determine if it is safe then go.

Maybe borrow an inspection camera with built in light, if needed, to see inside the liner ? At worst it would require a small hole.
Once you know it's solid and safe... who cares about the cosmetics... go spend time with family and enjoy the boat.
Stay Safe.

I checked out the inside as suggested and could find nothing wrong....it actually looked good (fingers crossed don't jinx myself). The keel locking bolt was bent so I pulled it and fab'd a replacement.

This winter I'll put some work on her. But dammit, I want to sail now.

Sorry if I am over cautious, I am new to this thing.

good for you, sometimes you just have to take your best shot.
Just be sure all have life jackets handy.
