Crazy rules in Washington?

I think if I take the bayonet off my SKS and put it on the flare pistol the rifle is no longer an assault weapon but the flare pistol is ???
Gotta read the rules.
http://lawfilesext.leg.wa.gov/biennium/2017-18/Pdf/Bills/Senate Bills/5444.pdf

What's an assault weapon?
(a) A semiautomatic rifle that has the capacity to accept a detachable magazine and has one or more of the following:
First is the SKS a semi-automatic rifle? Wikipedia says yes.

Does it have a detachable magazine? What's a detachable magazine? Take a look at paragraph 28:
(28) "Detachable magazine" means an ammunition feeding device that can be loaded or unloaded while detached from a firearm and readily inserted into a firearm.
Is a stripper clip a detachable magazine? Wikipedia isn't clear.

But wait, Paragraph 27(b) says:
(b) A semiautomatic pistol, or a semiautomatic, centerfire, or rimfire rifle with a fixed magazine, that has the capacity to accept more than ten rounds of ammunition;
So, maybe it is an assault weapon.

But then Paragraph 27(g) says:
"Assault weapon" does not include antique firearms, any firearm that has been made permanently inoperable, or any firearm that is manually operated by bolt, pump, lever, or slide action.
Is your SKS old enough to be an antique?

Sadly, the proposed assault weapon definition did not mention bayonets. So attaching one to a flare gun would not make it an assault rifle and removing it does not make the SKS a non-assault rifle.

Unless of course, the courts rule otherwise. :banghead:

I had heard a story from a fellow club member that he was boarded by the Canadian Coast Guard, they confiscated his flare gun under the guise that it was an illegal weapon, they also threatened him with arrest should he ever get caught again in Canada with an illegal weapon. The flares you must have on board are (6) hand held Type A, B or C
I did find this from the RCMP site, so perhaps the story I was told is a bit of an exaggeration, or the officer was having a bad hair day.

Devices designed exclusively for signalling purposes (e.g., flare guns), and intended to be used solely for that purpose, are exempt from the requirements set out below. However, some flare guns that are based on the same frame or receiver as a firearm are considered to be firearms and are not exempt from firearms controls.

So an 18.5 inch barreled shot gun with pistol grip and 5 rounds designed to repell bears or send rescue line to a ship in distress would be considered?

A rescue device?

Try a 1.75 inch long self defense round in the flair gun.
Actually your guilty on the west coast if you used a sling shot. Conservatives only invited to move to Texas.

David might have something to say about that.....
When I was about 8... I begged my mother for a BB gun. She was convinced I'd shoot my own eye out. But we compromised on a sling shot.... one of those "wrist rocket" types with the nylon tubing. I was a dead shot with that... slinging rocks and marble sized shot on the money. Way more lethal than the BB gun ever was.

I agree with those that don't wish to become a test case for 'a flare gun' weapon. That being what it is, they can all go to Davy Jones locker before I take mine off the boat, at least until I buy one of those new fangled electronic flares that are so wicked kewl. My idea would be to hang it from some kind of inflatable device that you can fly in the wind like an inflatable kite of some sort.... but that's off target...zipping it now

And it shall be again.

That's what I'm talkin' about. Empirical knowledge. "Don't kill Lucas."
They were using 2 3/4" shells. Load them with a Aguilla mini shells and they are good for 16 rounds, so far, with no failure :)

So who is going to 3D print one of these out of carbon nanotubes and paint it orange? If I'm thinking it, someone has already done it. No failure and hidden in plain sight. Perfect boat defense. Now you just need to hide the shells.

A note today from Senator Mark Harmsworth said it didn't make it out of committee.

I've fired quite a few of the 12 Gauge shells flares and lit even more of the hand held flares.

The 12 gauge aerial flares do not rise very high are not very bright and burn for a very short time. The handheld flares are very bright and burn for quite a while, if the cap has been exposed to moisture it can be tough to light kinda like a match book. A lighter lights them just fine.

I've quit carrying the 12 gauge flares.
