Crazy rules in Washington?

I've fired quite a few of the 12 Gauge shells flares and lit even more of the hand held flares.

The 12 gauge aerial flares do not rise very high are not very bright and burn for a very short time. The handheld flares are very bright and burn for quite a while, if the cap has been exposed to moisture it can be tough to light kinda like a match book. A lighter lights them just fine.

I've quit carrying the 12 gauge flares.

But they are nowhere nears as fun and drip crap all over the boat unless you hold them way out.
Did I menton they were nowhere near as much fun?

They are more fun

I forgot to mention the slag as a downside

Not as much fun as the 25mm or even 40mm ones

Besides the fun aspect they do offer a means of protection. The world is a crazy place and if push comes to shove a flare gun for protection is better than nothing and since they are legal to have on board in most places it's far better than nothing.
I think the flare gun used in the movie Dead Calm might have been a 20 mm instead of 12 Guage and it was probably enhanced for effect but I know I would not want to get nailed at close range with a round from a 12 Guage flare gun.
Now if they only made one with a high cap magazine LOL

1. A SOLAS flare is WAY brighter than the standard handheld flare.
2. A SOLAS handheld flare does not produce slag.
3. A handheld flare MAY be visible a few miles away because curvature.
4. An 25mm aerial flare can be seen more than 10 miles away.
5. 12 gauge pistol flares are a bad joke.
6. 25 mm pistol flares are bright, go much higher, and are compact. Carry lots.
7. A smoke canister produces a ridiculously powerful daytime distress signal. Think car fire on the freeway - who can not rubberneck.
8. A parachute aerial flare looks like the second coming.
