I just got back from a trip down St. Johns River in FL. The reason that this is important is that ST. Johns River has a special color to it... BROWN, well in traveling on the river I started to get water comming up from the below deck plates, started the bildge pump and got about 2-3 gal of river water over the side. The port and stb lockers below decks had about 1.5 inch of river water, so the question is: 1. is the water comming from a crack in the balast tank? 2. is the water comming from the stern deck to hull seal? I've checked the entire exterior hull for any damage and found none. Can I fill the balast tank on the trailer and see if water appears in port or stb lockers? Take the rubber bumper off back aft and see if any screws have worked loose... than repair? Or have I missed something else, The reason I beleave that it is not a topside leak is because of the color of the leakage

Wow, John

Check the thru hulls before taking off the rub rail. Which lockers are you talking about below decks? Inside the cabin, under the seats around the table? Do you have a transducer for your knot meter under the bed center? Check it, may be the seal is shot. Jim S/V Java

I have no thru hulls, the depth transduce is epoxied on the inside,,, work great... the lockers I'm talking about are the bench lockers below decks port and stbd around the table on the 260, and the acess under the aft "bed" where the bildge pump is located.

St Johns river water

I was sailing the St Johns Dec 26 to Jan 2. It's one of my favorite places. I too had some water in my seat lockers and determined it came from the centerboard bolt. A lot has been said about this the last few days but it's an easy thing to check. That wouldn't explain the water back by the bilge however. s/v Thome Inn

water

I have read accounts of water entering the boat thru the ballast tank vent, if it's not secured properly. The water would only come in when the boat is heeled over. This water could migrate to the places you describe (settee lockers and aft-berth bilge) through a gap between the sole liner and the hull itself. I'm not sure about the 260, but on the 26 you can see this gap when you lift up the step, around the edges. The same thing could happen at the seal for the ballast tank valve handle, if it fails. One possible solution would be to caulk the gap under the step. That would prevent the migration, and help to determine the source.
