I just had my new boat surveyed and the surveyor noted that the gelcoat below the waterline was gray in color. Is this done for a reason? He felt it looked like a factory job as he could not detect a depth change where the gel changes to white, so he deducted it looked original? It is a 1988 Catalina 30 -- I am wondering if this is some form of barrier coating the factory used? Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

My Recollection gets fuzzier with age...but...

If I recall correctly, 30 some years ago when I supervised quality control for a boat manufacturer, natural gel-coat was gray. I think my 2001 C320 has a gray hull and I think Catalina has been using vinylesther resin on the hull as a barrier coat for some time now...I have no clue as to the base color of that material.

I have an 87' with grey barrier coat below the water line. I believe it came from the factory that way.

I have a 1990 Cat 30 and was told at the time I bought mine (1998) that this was a Barrier coat. JS

Mine was grey!

My 22 1990 had grey gel coat below the water line......with not one blister!! Wish i could say that about my 1999 270!

I believe thats a barrier coat, but I don't think

it was standard. Good chance it was an add on from the dealer or added after the fact. Maybe an option from factory, but I've never seen it on the "option sheet" from Catalina. Can't be 100% sure when Catalina Went to Vinylester Resin , maybe about 1995 (?) but it is not typically gray . I have a 1999 C36 w/ Vinylester and the hull is white. Just go to an out of the water boat show and all the boats have white hulls.

I bought the boat new in 1990. It had a 5 year no blister warranty then. I will try to find a pic.
