I am considering installing a Force 10 Cozy Cabin diesel heater. I've checked through the archives and found a lot of pros

Heater

Hi: I had a Force 10 kerocence heater on the boat but took it off. It smelled bad and did not circutate much heat. We installed a Newport propane heater with a build in computer fan..... works great. Cost around 500 Cnd and I put the tank in the rear lazerette. One outher problem with the diesel is that it creates a lot of humidity. This new system is very dry heat and a very pretty way to light the cabin at night. If you what to see a pic of my heater set up look under the photo forem , then upgrades and improvments . Brad..... happy boating!

Propane Tank Installation

Your heater looks real nice in the picture. What size propane tank did you install and how did you anchor it in the stern locker? Also, what components did you need to buy in addition to what was included in the kit from Dickinson? I've been going back and forth between diesel and propane for a cabin heater. Looks like there are some good prices right now on the Dickinson Newport. The admiral (my wife) wants a heater, so I gotta get something in there...

Dickinson Propane

I also installed a Dickinson propane heater in December and it allowed me to work on my boat all winter. I ran a switched T off the factory 10lb. I'll only be using it spring and fall so with a bit of record keeping the extra propane used will not be a problem. The 30' run to my forward bulkhead was a pain but the result was worth it. Propane Installation

When you installed the heater and propane hose, did you also install a solenoid controlled valve? Is it OK to just use manual valves at the tank and heater?

Propane

Hello.. Dickinson comes with all you need accept I needed 35 feet of hose to reach from lazerette to heater.I have a stove aready,so I just kept my 10lb tank and got a 5lb spare. I have a selonoid at the tank and also installed a sniffer with auto shutt off. Put 1 sniffer at the tank and 1 on the floor. I always shut off propane when not using it or not on the boat. Don't hook it up "Micky Mouse" be safe. It can run on low heat about 3.5 days and nights. I keep the fan on very low, uses about 0amp power and about .5amp to keep celonoid open. No t's in the boat all must be in the box at the tank vented overboard. Get new 1200 btu,if you will be out in the snow and a 20lb tank. I am happy with what I have. Brad :)

Diesel Heater

Geoff; I have the Cozy diesel installed on my C38 and have been happy with the heater. I sail Lake Superior and have been on the boat in 10 degree F. and it has kept me warm. The only smoke problem I've had was when first learning to light the burner. I was not allowing the burner to heat up enough before lighting the fuel, but after the learning curve flattened out, I've had no problem. Craig Steinkraus " Wings " C38 #280

Fuel tank for diesel heater

For the diesel heater, did you use gravity feed or a pressurized tank? If gravity feed, how high above the heater must the tank be installed? Once you figure out the proper startup procedure, is there any problem with diesel smell in the cabin when the heater is operating? Thanks to all of you who have provided information on the diesel vs propane heater topic. It seems that both types can serve the purpose quite well though there are some very definite preferences and it's quite helpful to hear these. The Admiral has laid down the law - we're getting a heater. What she wants, she generally gets, so I gotta get busy and order one type or the other soon.
