Never mind that, Ed, tell us how you liked the Cat compared to the H34
First I apologize I usually edit the thread topic when the subject branches off but I am not sure yet how to change.
Anyway I know the question on the preference of the cat was directed to Ed but I'd like to share my thoughts.
Like most on this forum, I would guess, are mono-hull sailers. In fact, I hate to admit, that I really
disliked the catamarans as they did not seem so traditional. Sure not a good reason I admit. Anyway, after our first charter in BVI on a monohull it really hit me! While mono-hulls are great for experienced sailors the Cats are
great for
everyone, especially less experienced sailors.
We ended chartering with four couples a Moorings 4800 (Leopard 48) the end of January again in BVI. It was a massive success.
I was very worried, as I was the one that suggested this trip. The key to the success was the beautiful catamaran.
I would say I would not buy a Catamaran to own, but for a relaxing weeks of great sailing I would
only charter a Cat for now on, unless it was strictly a group of dye in the wool sailors.
Anyway some benefits of a Cat:
- Minimal heeling under sail so everyone cal walk around the huge deck and boat very comfortably
- At mooring at night very little rocking. Which I like but many don't
- The cabins are the only thing in the actual hulls. There were two in each huh, one forward, one aft so total privacy as no walls are shared
- Ensuite head and separate shower per each cabin.
- The common salon area is above water and 360 degrees of windows and the same level as the front and rear deck. So it's very conducive as a public area
- Very fast sailing or motoring (8-9 knots)
- Two diesels about 50HP each so super to maneuver under power
- Three separate Air Cond systems zones if you want it. Each hull and common area are separate controls.
- Nice genset for 120vac power
Again this is coming from a guy that hated cats but I admit it when I am wrong and probably a little more excited then I should be, but it was such a great trip.
