What grit sandpaper do I use to sand the interprotect 2000 before I apply vc17?
best i remember it is a non sanding primer coat but if you must it would be best to use 120 or 150 grit if you don't wait too long being a non sanding primer you can paint right over it ...someone correct me if i am incorrect plz

Happen to have some sitting right by computer-

carton says-

no sanding between coats.

no sanding between 2000Eand anti fouling

apply interprotect at (example) at 0800, 0900, 1200, 1500
Day two- apply 2000e-

0800 , 1100, then at 1600-first coat of bottom paint

Taken directly from carton

As Ralph said 80 grit, but don't forget the Fiberglass Solvent Wash 202 before and after sanding... Be sure you will have the DFT of IP2KE you desire before sanding...

For a standard antifouling paint you can "hot coat" / "thumb-print" it but not with any of the vinyl based paints such as VC17..

"Do not use the “Thumb Print” test when applying VC® Offshore,
Baltoplate, VC®17m Extra or any vinyl antifouling over
InterProtect. Apply and extra coat of InterProtect and allow to
cure for 24 hours and then sand with 80-grit sandpaper."

Sadly they can't fit it all on the can of paint. You do not hot coat any of the vinyl based anti fouling paints to IP2KE. For IP2KE to IP2KE there is no sanding required unless you wait longer than 6 months but for IP2KE to VC17 the IP2KE must be dry then sanded, then solvent washed then the VC17 can be applied. If temps are in the cooler range 24 hours cure for the IP2KE may not be sufficient...

I have painted many boats over the years and that included talking with manufacturers. On Barrier coats once dry which is an epoxy paint, it is hard and applying most if not all paints will slough off over time if applied direct without any prep work. It use to be while the last barrier coat was applied and before if finally kicked, you could apply bottom paint but formulas have changed due EPA and what ever else got involved. Therefore at my dealership, we had a good supply of 80 grit and acetone. Use gloves in particular with acetone and that the gloves are resistant to that. You will have to sand to roungh up the surface just like you would on new gel coat and then clean off to paint.

However there was a primer in its day by Petit called 6999 and I am not sure if that is still around or not. The instructions said one thing but best results was to apply the first coat of bottom paint while the 6999 was still tacky. It worked thus avoiding sanding and the paint held. Yes there were a few cases that employees did not follow my instructions and they on their own time, removed and repainted to my spesc.

Are you applying VC17 over FRESH IP2000 or is this VC17 over VC17 over IP2000? If it is just another coating of VC17 for this year, it is not this complicated. I have used VC17 for 23 years, and I just apply a fresh coat over what is there. The new coat dissolves enough of the previous coat(s) to stick just fine. No need to sand, just wash with water and let dry before coating.

Sorry- yes- missed that line down at the bottom of the carton, about VC 17 and other performance coatings. Didn't read the entire carton, but it's all there, showing multiple kinds of bottom paints and how to deal with.

My bad

Thanks for the update! Glad it is there because many owners won't go beyond the can label and this can lead to major headaches....
