I just purchased a 1974 27' Catalina. In the galley there is a 2burner Primus stove. I think it is an alcohol stove by the smell of the vapours coming from the tank when I take the cap off. Is there anyone else that has a stove like this on their boat? Any and all information greatfully received.

Had one

I had an alcohol stove on the boat I had before I got my C27. It took a little while to learn it's idiosyncracies, but after awhile I got comfortable with it, although I much prefer the propane one I have on my 27. You need to pump up the tank, then crack the valve slightly to allow enough alcohol to flow to fill the priming cup underneath the burner more than about 1/2 full. Then close the valve on the tank. Light the alcohol in the priming cup and let it burn off until the flame goes out. LET IT ALL BURN OFF! Once you've burned enough alcohol in the cup to empty it, the burner will be warm enough to vaporize the alcohol as it flows up from the tank. That's the key! Then open the valve, and light the burner. If you open the valve and try to start the burner before the it's warm enough to vaporize the alcohol, you'll get a flaring flame that can take off your eyebrows (or your curtains!). Water will put out an alcohol fire by cooling the alcohol down. Keep a spray bottle full of water near the stove where you cna get hold of it in a hurry in case you get a flare-up. Oh, and alcohol doesn't burn with a particularly hot flame, so it takes awhile to cook. Good luck!

This might help.

. I recently bought a '74 C-27 as well. Mine has a Seaward Princess 2 burner alcahol stove. The international C-27 site has that manual on-line and maybe it will help. Here's the page.

Had one also

I have a 84 C 27 which came with a alcohol stove. The guy doing my survey said there pretty dangerous, because the older ones are presureised. He told me to get a magum gas grill for outside and a little single burner butane for coffee inside, and if I got into crusing get a NEW alcohol stove or install propane

Try an Origo 3000

When I got my 1982 C27 about six years ago, it did not have a stove. I asked the previous owner, and he said he ripped it out and threw it overboard because he was so angry it burned the heck out of his arms. It was one of those original Princess pressurized alcohol units. I bought a two-burner Origo 3000 non-pressurized alcohol stove with gimbal accessory, and it dropped right in after I added two stainless steel bolts for the gimballing. I have been very happy with the Origo, and can recommend it.

Many Thanks

Sounds like you have identified the stove on the boat. I have had experience with Origo. I would agree they are easy to work with. Thanks again.
